Princess Dye
What contending team lacks a leadoff hitter that would be willing to give up a corner OF spot for Pods? Do any contending teams lack a DH? We may not be able to move people anyway. I'm looking forward to watching a full year of baseball. Maybe just move Dotel for a prospect. Buehrle>Wood
There is no reason to trade Pods. And as out there as it sounds, a lot of minor league contracts have club options for the next season. We should seriously consider picking his up for 2010 if he has one.
Princess Dye
Yea, I mean with all the stats we throw around here, we have to (sadly) be very open to the possibility that this player will return to his norm. and on top of that be ready for decrease in physical abilities as aging furthers. Princess Dye
What I would hate to see happen is Pods be depended on for next year. Then things fall apart, and perhaps we are once again in the familiar spot of having a productive team w/ no leadoff hitter. If they want to cover leadoff and bring back Pods anyway, then great. I suppose if there's a leadoff hitter brought in perhaps at 2b......it's possible they could have Pods replace Dye and then have Brandon Allen waiting in the wings if it doesnt work out. Again all that comes down to whether or not he even has trade value right now. I would think yes, especially if a team is not super familiar with his CF fielding. beautox
The mets strike me as a team that would come calling for Scott, Reyes is down and their OF is in shambles and they constantly putting Murphy in a position to fail both in the line up and on the field. With Delgado being out as well, i think you could get a nice package for him and Paul if we're out of it.

Why are we talking about trading our good players again. We are contenders. I would argue Pods' norm is well below what we're seeing now. If anything Pods' norm has been getting injured. I definitely hope it continues, but at the same time anyone who's willing to overpay with prospects - you would have to listen. The one argument for keeping Pods at all costs...isnt so much based on how skilled he is, but how much of a dearth of leadoff hitters there is. Special K
So what do those who want Pods traded suggest we do? Trade him while his value is high, pretend like were going to go after a leadoff hitter in the off seasos (not pick one up), or pick up Chone Figgins (who is very comparable to Pods in age/ability) for a ton of money? Or how about trade Pods and have an open competition for the spot in CF between Brian Anderson and Dwayne Wise, b/c that's also turned out great. Then a year from now we'll all be crying for them to bring up Mitchell or Danks because we don't have someone who can leadoff. The guy is doing well, the Sox would be in the cellar without him, and realistically, you're not going to get too much in a trade for him, b/c GMs all know the same thing we know, he is injury prone and older. Let's ride him out and enjoy the success, especially if we want to make a run at the division.
Chisoxfn
If Thome accepts would it make sense to move him in a deal, buy an OFer and let Quentin DH the remainder of the year (for his foot). I know the Sox are looking to add a corner OFer if they can find one.

Why are we talking about trading our good players again. We are contenders. That last part is the most important phrase right now. This team is one game under .500 and 5 games out and they've been without Quentin pretty much all year (and may end up being without him all year). They have played much better baseball in about the past month or so. You keep this team together until the point comes to break it apart. Perhaps could offer someone that helps for 9 more yrs as opposed to 9 more months We go round n round. Heck even Cincinnati. Humorously enough to replace Taveras, who many here wanted. I think this team is set for the year unless they tank before the middle of July. The only addition to this team, at this point, should be TCQ. Princess Dye
I hate to say this, but I think we're setting up for a situation just like the White Flag year. Except this year we probably wont make a deal. But Pods has come here and made us JUST good enough to contemplate not selling pieces. And I do enjoy watching this team. But he has come here and gotten us how many wins of our last 20? Eleven i believe. And that's just good enough to look decent in the standings, but we have to look at the current farm system and take any opportunities to make it go from good to outstanding. Reason being, a lot of money is about to free up. We could have one of those rare perfect storms where we have an excellent farm system plus great longterm FA acquisitions in 2010. And yet on the other side, we can stay content with our 33 yr old leadoff hitter with history of injury. And we can enjoy our aging DH who has started to experience a dip in average (which usually leaguewide leads to a later downturn in OBP when yr at his age) Edited June 29, 2009 by Princess Dye
Frankensteiner
There's really no use in trading Pods. No one is going to give us an A prospect for him, so the return of any potential prospects we receive pales in comparison to the benefit of having a true lead-off hitter. It's obviously far from a sure thing whether or not Pods can keep this up, but I'll take the risk instead of selling high.

Even if a team is desperate, I can't imagine the Sox getting anywhere close to what the Indians got for DeRosa...and he's having a hell of a year. Thome, maybe, but probably not. You just laid out the reason why in your post. Ride them out...take what they can give you...and hope for the best. Look at the players KW has traded or signed...headcases, downside of their careers, one pitch away, need a change of scenery, this is the Sox' M.O. And it's not a bad one. I think Danks is the only one that doesn't fit that description and the Sox won that trade. Kenny has learned. Not to mention, the fans have re-embraced Scotty Pods with his hustle, stick-to-it-iveness and spark at the top of the order. And Thome is one of the nicest, most likeable guys out there. We all want the Sox to win, but trading pieces just to save a half a year salary and to get a Michael Dubee in return just isn't worth it. I think youare going to see more trades like Corky Miller. Which is why I think JorDanks is the least likely of our prospects to be traded. Does he K too much to bat leadoff? Granderson had a similar issue, but improved dramatically. Some good news from a twitter on FutureSox about D2's wrist: "JPN spotted Prospect Jordan Danks, who is currently on the DL with a wrist injury, playing catch without his brace/cast." JPN is the MAN in B'Ham.

Free agency is really weak this year. Jason Bay and Matt Holliday are the two best players. I can't imagine Boston letting Bay go, and it's doubtful the Sox would deal with Holliday and Boras. Figgins and Orlando Hudson are the other possibilities but I wouldn't really classify these guys as anything more than good players. As sad is it sounds, our best bet might be to try to stick it out with our old codgers on short-term deals and wait until 2011.

greg775
Nobody's going to give us squat for Pods. He's ours for the season. Anybody could have picked him up when we did. We just have to hope he can stay on this roll.
SoxAce
Our odds increase ALOT more trading Pods than trading Jim Thome. Unless the Cubs think he can play RF, or if the Indians want him at 1B or to trade Hafner.
greg775
But who the heck would want Pods? We picked him up off scrapheap and he's doing well in our jersey. Nobody else is going to give up anything for him but some Triple A hack.
