Potential teams that could come calling

But who the heck would want Pods? We picked him up off scrapheap and he's doing well in our jersey. Nobody else is going to give up anything for him but some Triple A hack.

When you got Cubs announcers, Brewers announcers and even Stone saying teams are definitely taking interest in Pods right now, you know he's got SOME value.

If a team offered us a great deal for Pods, fine, but I doubt that's gonna happen, so there really is no point in trading him. And Thome ain't going anywhere either due to the fact he can play only DH and has his NTC, and he prefers to stay in Chicago or back to Cleveland.

If we went into full sell mode, we're looking at Dye for sure being on the block. His name has been involved in trade talks dating back to 07, so it'd come to no surprise if he does wind up getting traded.

The Cubs would have use for Pods. The deal was even rumored back when Pods was real bad a few yrs ago.

Also I really do think Thome would go play for a bigtime contender for a few months. Granted he's near family here, but the second half of the year living away completely would be comparable to the time he'd be away from Illinois staying as a Sox on roadtrips anyway.

I might not say this if not Thome's own history in World Series close calls and his comments about how frustrating that has been.

Princess Dye, that is a very good point about Thome. The Rangers could be a team interested considering the sucky-ness of their two best power left handed hitters, Blalock and Davis. Plus, Jones ain't doing all that hot either anymore. Thome would really help out that middle of the order with his OBP. However, he probably wouldn't want to go to a fringe competitor like Texas and rather stay with the Sox.

Yankees would make sense if Matsui gets injured for a long period of time, but that's only if Matsui gets injured within a month.

With Ortiz heating up, the Red Sox don't make much sense either. And even if he still was sucking, they'd more than likely go after someone like Fox from the cubs.

Maybe the Angels, but they aren't gonna platoon Thome with Vlad, and they can't put Vlad in LF because of how good Rivera has been for them.

Rays don't make sense.

Maybe the Blue Jays, but it doesn't seem like a move they'd make or a team Thome would want to go to.

I'd prefer not to see him traded within the central.

Odds of trading Thome are extremely low.

If Pods keeps this up I have to imagine he winds up at least a type B guy this offseason right? Thus it actually helps us to hold on to him?

He might, but I'm not sure considering his 08 year sucked.

I think it makes sense to take offers on all players who are not expected to be part of our 2011 team and going forward. If we get offers for prospects or projects who will help us in the future or possibly help us acquire veterans for the future then we should make those deals. One obvious exception would be Buehrle, who IIRC runs through 2011 but should - if he wants to continue playing, and playing for the Sox - be extended afterwards.

I don't think we need a great deal to move Pods. If some team came along and offered us a package including a young power arm who has produced in Low-A or higher, and/or a young toolsy position player who has produced at Low-A or higher, then I make that deal if our scouts like those players.

It's pretty simple, if we're still in it at the trade deadline then pods isn't going anywhere. If we're out of it, Pods will get dealt for the best possible package as there would be no point to keep him.

Just out of curiosity, and I'm not saying I would do this for sure........

...if the Cubs came calling for Pods and Thornton, and they were willing to deal their top prospect (vitters) and perhaps someone else with a bright future

would you bite?

The Cubs want to improve bullpen and top of the order, but they cant take on much salary b/c of their ownership situation being in flux.

The Sox would have Poreda, Gobble (and perhaps one day Richard) as lefties in the pen still. Poreda still hasnt developed a second pitch enough to be starter level....the thorntons of the world are often first rounders and sometimes we just have to accept that.

As far as Pods, you would have to assume that there's no comfortable place for him here in the outfield when Quentin is back. We're so bad defensively as is and I would hate to see CF go that same route. If we had strikeout pitchers, that would be one thing.

ok now kill me (i may not be able to joust at all bout this for a few hours unfortunately)

No. You don't trade a guy who's inexpensive & putting up numbers.

Unless you're gonna get a really good package, you don't let that go.

the point of this thread is if we're selling. no big contracts are movable, making pods' an attractive option for several clubs. if we're selling, its EXACTLY the reason you trade him. he's a FA at the end of the year, there would be no point to keep him a full year in a rebuilding mode.

There is no reason to trade Pods. And as out there as it sounds, a lot of minor league contracts have club options for the next season. We should seriously consider picking his up for 2010 if he has one.

I wouldn't mind if he was ST with the Sox next year, but not as the number one option. I obviously love what he has given to the team this year, but hopefully KW and the Sox look at it as a lightining in a bottle and if brought back next year he wouldn't be handed anything.

maybe we can give them Beckham too for someone else who might have a bright future.

I would seriously vomit if this trade happened, I dont want vitters

we can make it dotel/pods if that aids your nausea.

to me you have to strike now to beef up the farm system. We could be 2 yrs away from having one of those rare teams with great vets (current guys and free agency purchases) and great youth.

The Cubs farm system has produced so little over the last few years and what it has produced has seen results with guys in their mid to late 20s. That's not a team I would want to target for prospects.

The sox will keep Pods around for 2009. They can offer him arb. and see if he accepts [which he probably won't, as other team may offer him a better deal] and then get a pick for him.

Thornton shouldn't be moved either. Gobble and Poreda aren't ready to be the main guy for the 8th inning. But a guy like Dotel could and should, as the sox won't offer him arb. and they have young guys who can take his place.

I could see Brian Anderson moved, esp. when/ if Carlos comes back [as Pods goes to CF]. If Wise continues hitting, he'll be the 4th OFer, with Norris Hopper and Danks in reserve in AAA and AA respectively.

I really don't expect the sox to make any moves by the deadline. Other teams want too much young talent for even marginal vets. With Quentin due back, his bat would be huge pickup, far better than any deal that could be made.

Of course, this all depends on how the sox play in July. If they're far back, I could see a few moves made that include Dye, Dotel, and Pods.

I wouldn't mind getting either Hoffpauir or Fox from them.... but not for Pods or Thornton.
