ObamaKnowsBest
Would you believe me if I said Josh Fields has more hits than Jim Thome? Well he does. 47 to 45. I'd like to see Big Jim pick it up a little bit. He's seems even more all-or-nothing as of late (granted the interleague break didn't help him). His power and on-base percentage numbers are still there though, 13 HR, 42 RBI, .492 SLG and .397 OBP with 49 walks. I've got faith in him, just was shocked by the number of hits when I was looking through team hitting stats, more K's (62) than hits (45). qwerty
2006 season... Paul konerko - 177 hits. Jermaine dye - 170 hits. Tadahito iguchi - 156 hits. Joe crede - 154 hits. A.j. pierzynski - 150 hits. Jim thome - 141 hits. Thome and dye were both in the top ten in ops, iso, wOBA, not to mention about 20+ other offensive categories that truly matter. Are you seriously try and tell me that konerko, iguchi, crede, and pierzynski were in anyway more valuable than thome? 2009 season... Paul konerko - 77. Alexei ramirez - 73. Jermaine dye - 70. A.j. pierzynski - 67. Scott podsednik - 66. Chris getz - 49. Josh fields - 47. Jim thome - 45. Despite a total of 7 other players with more hits than thome... the only player even remotely close to the production of thome's is dye. witesoxfan
Jim Thome's M.O. for his entire career has been walk, homer, or strike out. 47% of the hits Jim Thome has had in his career have gone for extra bases, and I don't know why that would suddenly change when he's 38. It's not disturbing at all.
ObamaKnowsBest
QUOTE (qwerty @ Jun 30, 2009 -> 12:22 AM) Thome and dye were both in the top ten in ops, iso, wOBA, not to mention about 20+ other offensive categories that truly matter. Are you seriously try and tell me that konerko, iguchi, crede, and pierzynski were in anyway more valuable than thome? Comparing those guys to Fields and how poorly he has played doesn't give that stat justice. Those guys were all solid players. I never said Thome isn't valuable, just that I was suprised and think he could step it up a little bit.

That's what he gets paid for... drive in runs that is... so accepting singles I reckon is out of the question

I love Jim Thome, but remember he was basically a bench player during interleague play and also injured wasn't h

ObamaKnowsBest
I think this thread has been misinterpreted as a Thome bashing. Not intended that way at all. No one else shocked when they saw Fields had more hits than Thome?

SoxFan562004
This is why BA and hits alone can be an incomplete stat, especially for a 3-6 hitter
