NorthSideSox72
A US Airways plane en route from Charlotte to Los Angeles, decided to divert to Albuquerque because of a medical emergency on board. That's a little unusual, but then it got a lot weirder. Some dude decided to take off all his clothes while in his seat, refused to put them back on, and became combative with the flight crew. All on the same plane.
Nunnigan
My weirdest flight wasnt as bad as that, but it was real embarrasing. Two years ago, my family and I were flying back from Phoenix. Halfway through the flight, I woke up from a nap and noticed some 40+ year old lady was sitting right next to me, hitting on me. Before you even say "What's the problem?" she was absolutley plastered, smelling of alcohol and about 20 years older than me. She was very flirtatious and very touchy-feeley. Approaching Chicago, late at night, she told me that she wanted to see the city lights because she's never seen them before. I told her if she wanted to switch seats since I had the window seat, but she said she was fine sitting where she was. At any time the plane flew over city, no matter how big or small, she would always lean over and ask me if that was Chicago. Getting fed up, I signaled to my brother and mom, who were sitting in the seats across the asile, to bring over a flight attendant. All they did was laugh at what I had to put up with. As the plane was making its decent into O'Hare is when it really started to get awkward. Like you all know, you have to remain seated, with your seatbelts fastened, while the plane makes its decent, this lady however ignored such rules. The flight attendants have to remind her several times to fasten her seat belt, until finally there was an argument between the lady and the attendants. She was removed from the seats next to me, and the attendants apologized to me for over serving her, and for her actions. When the plane landed, everyone on the plane was laughing and joking around with me for all that I had to put up with. This was perhaps one of the most embarrasing moments of my life. Same kind of thing happened to me on a flight to China. It was enough of a drop that everyone screamed. It was a short "fall," but it felt like forever. Afterwards, everyone just looked around at each other and laughed nervously.

It was one of those little regional prop jets. It was awful, the plane just kept suddenly dropping. Honestly it felt like we were just getting thrown about. I remember thinking, "oh f***, I don't want to die in grad school!" The eventual landing was smooth, though.
kapkomet
Flying "jumpseat" in the cockpit of a cargo plane is interesting. And cargo guys don't really give a crap if they go through some turbulence. I've experienced terrible landings, aborted takeoffs, turbulence that really would make you s*** bricks, mechanical failures where you think you're going to not see the ground in one piece again, etc. One of the weirder times was flying on a very hot summer day. Now, yes, it's cold above, but static electricity is higher in the summer (duh, thunder, etc.). So many times, the front of the plane is conducting static electricity - it looks like little lightning dancing across the front of the plane - and you wouldn't know it sitting in the back. It's weird. Nothing to worry about, just weird, sitting there watching it. Good times.

Same here. On a flight from Atlanta to Myrtle Beach I lost the ability to sleep on a plane. I developed this sensation of "falling" while almost falling asleep. Falling and being at 33,000 feet is not compatible. I'll wake up with a startled look and I think I just screamed. Prior to that I was flying weekly for my work. I could fall asleep while taxiing. dasox24
Back in '90, I was on a plane from LA to DC during the Christmas holidays. Due to bad weather, we were put into a holding pattern above DC. However, during that time (unbeknown to us on the plane), some mercenaries hired to free a big-time drug lord being transported to the US took over the air traffic control radio frequencies and also killed lights to all the runways, so the pilots had essentially no visibility of the airport. And we were running low on fuel, so we had to make an emergency landing, but luckily, some cop from LA blew up the plane the mercenaries were in (killing the bad guys), so it lit up the runway and the pilot made a safe landing. Pretty crazy night.

Pretty crazy night. Awesome, I didn't realize what you were describing until the very end. The worst experience I had flying wasn't actually too bad. I was flying to Chicago from Boston this past winter, and a really big storm was moving into Boston (and there was one in Chicago, too). I arrived to the airport pretty early which ended up being a great decision, as they bumped me up to the earlier flight. That flight ended up being delayed for hours, but eventually took off. It was the last plane to actually fly out, and the rest were cancelled. We had a stop-over in New York, but the plane from New York was supposed to leave basically the second we landed, but that ended up being delayed as well and I had about 20 minutes to sit around that airport. This flight, again, was the last one to leave the airport. While waiting for the plane, I started talking to some girl who was making the exact same trip as me. At some point during our conversation, she noticed from the window that the baggage handlers were putting her luggage onto the wrong plane (the airline worker phoned in earlier to have them take our luggage directly to the gate our plane would be leaving from, but there was another plane already there bound for DC). The worker called the handlers and they pulled our luggage out. I eventually made it to Chicago late at night, about 8 hours later than planned, but I felt lucky considering all of the crap that happened. And then they lost my luggage for a few days on the flight back to Boston. Edited July 4, 2009 by Milkman delivers
