fathom
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 4, 2009 -> 01:44 AM) Really, if KW makes any deal right now with how this team is playing its because he's decided to clear some space, maybe even for Allen. There really is no where for anyone to play that gives us a big upgrade. Honestly, unless we offer up Poreda/Richard in a package again as we acquire a big time starter, nothing makes sense. fathom
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 4, 2009 -> 01:45 AM) With Allen gone, then we pretty much have to keep Thome somehow next season...don't we? It's not too hard, especially in this market, to find designated hitters for cheap.

caulfield12
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 3, 2009 -> 07:44 PM) No way a GM makes a trade right now then has the guy he trades for get benched behind Quentin, even if there's only a 33% chance that Q comes back healthy. But that works both ways, KW has the leverage to say he doesn't HAVE to do the deal as he's not really desperate...with the 2008 AL MVP coming back soon. They don't have him over a barrel, just like when we had six starters in terms of depth in 2005. Then there's the other question of how long Pods can stay healthy, too. Does KW really believe that Quentin can return to form and that Pods can avoid the injury bug looking at the back of his baseball card for the past five seasons? Agreed, sell high on both of those lefties. Haren't obviously the big gun, and KW has my blessing to unload any prospect we have not named Gordon. Balta1701
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 3, 2009 -> 06:47 PM) Does KW really believe that Quentin can return to form and that Pods can avoid the injury bug looking at the back of his baseball card for the past five seasons? Even if he does believe that...he's not going to waste talent to bench them before he knows for sure that he's lost them. Think about it this way...let's say Pods has a 50/50 shot of being healthy, Quentin has a 50/50 shot of being healthy. There's a really good chance that at least 1 of them gives us the rest of the season, and our offense gets no worse, and there's a moderate chance that they're both healthy. If they're both hurt, then there's still time to make a deal even on the waiver wire deadline.

caulfield12
However, if KW did get a RH hitting outfielder with pop, that player would be guaranteed 30-40% playing time as the RH DH/PH for Thome regardless of what happens with Quentin and/or Pods health-wise. caulfield12
Game on. Soon to be 7-6 Tigers...Span comes through with a huge, clutch triple. Runner on 3rd (Harris) with only one out, two chances to tie. Huge for the Tigers to blow a 7-1 lead in a pivotal division match-up. The worst thing KW could do is upset the chemistry that seems to be building. We already have a guy who can DH vs LHP if we need it, and that guy is Josh Fields. We're really beefing up our attack against LHP, with Alexei hitting .400 vs lefties, and Nix/Castro providing some spark.
