Defensive talent and ability. The guy can't hit.

The question is who gets sent down when CQ is ready? If not BA or Wise, it has to be a reliever.

I assume Wise would go, but don't rule out Fields being sent down.

I'd be very surprised if Fields got sent down.

I love BA as much as the next guy, but he's pretty much blown his shot this year.

I'm no fan of Anderson, but I'd keep him solely for his D. If you keep Wise you got a lefty off the bench who's slightly less bad of a hitter but a better threat on the bases. With Anderson, you got more power, but a worse hitter, not as fast of a runner, but a very good defensive player. I'll take the later. Plain and simple, neither should be getting any regular playing time, but I'll take the defensive replacement over the pinch runner.

I know why Oz is going to send BA down (he loves Wise's speed) but I wish he'd send Wise down

and keep BA for his defense at least. We don't need another lefty outfield bat as long as Pods is healthy.

Sending BA down would be dumb. Trade him rather than send him down.

Or why not just send down Gobble?

If our starters keep going 7+ there's no reason to hold on to him for the time being; he won't even get garbage innings and Poreda can work as a long man alongside Carrasco. Plus it'll be right after the AS Break, so everyone in the pen will be rested.

This is just dumb.

If you want to trade anyone, it should be Fields, but then you'd be dumping him at pretty much his lowest possible return. Anderson has ZERO value...below even Joe Borchard when he was traded for Thornton.

With the uncertainties about Viciedo's defense and CJ Retherford looking more like a utility guy at the next level, you have to hold onto Josh "just in case."

Trading Anderson, as much as I dislike him as an everyday player, is silly AND stupid. KW's not going to stick Danks, Shelby III or Mitchell onto the major league roster in the heat of a pennant race. It's just putting way too much reliance on the health of CQ and Pods...

There was a time in 2006, and possibly into 2007, when I thought BA could blossom outside of the Sox organization. Now I think at some point he will be with 5 teams in 5 years and just kind of hang around.

I believe BA would fluorish as a national leaguer.

Defense in CF wins games

I have never seen someone so mediocre defensively, in any sport, get praised as much as he does. The kicker? People think he is a gold glove caliber defender.

He's far from mediocre on defense.

After nearly 2000 innings (essentially a full season and a half) in the field anderson's career numbers literally hover right around the league average in every defensive metric known to man. If that is not mediocre, then i don't know what is.

By your own words, its average then. Mediocre and Average are two seperate words with two different meanings. I dont get how you can statistically show BA being an average defender then in the same breath call him mediocre. :lolhitting While a lot of us are fanboys of BA and do overrate his D, you are just hating. He is in the middle, average.

Until he hits FA, there's not really a major need for the Sox to deal him unless he demands a trade.

He offers value as a 4th OF who can play all 3 OF spots, and his plate discipline has improved this season, albeit the power has dropped.

I certainly think this is the last year of BA on the Sox. He should be dealt in the offseason, though he could be part of a deadline trade for a team that is out of it and wants to take an extended look at him.

But right now, he offers decent value to the sox for his defense and ability to play all 3 OF spots.

The only type of teams where I could see BA starting is on a team like Seattle or San Diego where his defensive ability would be more valuable in a spacious ballpark.

But then players like Scott Hairston has thrived this season FWIW.

In 2006 IIRC his defensive metrics were through the roof. He hasn't repeated it since then. Still, compared to the other trash we've had out there, he really does look like an elite CF sometimes.

Mediocre = below average btw.

Interesting.

Mediocre can mean below average, but it can of course mean average.

Mediocre definitions:

''Not very high quality; average or second rate''.

''Of average to below average quality''.

Poor to middling in quality; "there have been good and mediocre and bad artists"... middling seems rather average to me.

Synonyms for middling? Average, mediocre, moderate, ordinary... etc.

lacking exceptional quality or ability; "a novel of average merit"; "only a fair performance of the sonata"; "in fair health"; "the caliber of the students has gone from mediocre to above average"; "the performance was middling at best"

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Simply put, you had no argument, yet wanted to chime in, and then you question someone's grammar without having proper knowledge of how a specific word can be used. At the very least i would have made 100% sure i was correct before ''correcting'' another individual in that regard.

He was a plus defender in 2006, nothing exceptional. His arm, which was in the bottom third of all center fielders, is what held him back.

Q's got a point. I think we were all in awe of Brian's d in 2006. Remember the article that came out that year (it was either baseball prospectus or MLB.com) that showed Brian was on a record-setting pace for runs saved over the course of a year or something? Combine that with the fact we've had guys like Pods, Dye, Mack, Swisher, ect patrolling the OF for the last few years and it's easy to overrate Brian's d.
