Brian Anderson's last stand?

I sort of think if Anderson doesn't show SOMETHING offensively in the next couple weeks, we'll have seen the last of him in a (major league) white sox uniform, and probably the last of him in any major league uniform. a .223 career average, and the worst OPS of qualified/non-qualified CF (.630, 40th out of 40, his slugging is actually lower than his OBP). Career OPS of .650 is absolutely abysmal. I've always been a fan and thought he didn't get enough of a chance, but 800 ABs is enough of a chance. The kid is not a ML hitter.

Great defender though.

I dont see why he cant just be a 4th OF ongoing.

He's past the age where you can get anything for him.

I think you need a 4th OF who is not an utter hole in the lineup. I don't think we can keep him on solely as a late inning defensive replacement.

Whether or not we can get anything for him is hardly the point, whether we can plug someone else better in is. He's a sunk cost and has no trade value and never will.

I don't want to see another Brian Anderson thread ever again. Seriously. What else needs to be said? What more can be said?

There are plenty of other players who this can also apply to. The only reason I started this one is that it seems to me like he may be at the end of the road.

The s*** has been beaten out of the horse long ago on Brian Anderson. He got his shot, he's blown it. It's over.

edit: still better than Wise though and the only semi-viable option in CF with Quentin out.

I agree. I think after Quentin comes back, both Wise and Anderson's days with the sox may be numbered.

What the heck is qualified/non-qualified? Which is it? DeWayne Wise has a lower OPS on the season.

I meant of all CF whether qualified or not in terms of 3.1 AB per game played or whatever the number is. D. Wise was not listed as a CF on espn's sortables.

We can hope that Anderson stays and Wise goes, but I kinda doubt that happens.

Actually, I'd be good with both of them going, and giving one of the outfielders in AAA or AA a shot instead.

But Wise is the worst of all options for 4th OF. As bad a hitter as BA is, Wise is worse, and is a far worse defender.

if we're talking about a bench player, Wise had some pretty good PH stats last year. This year he's been streaky, if you call streaky being all out bad for a while and then delivering modestly well in situations in a recent stretch.

Whereas BA has been mired in one very long drought after a nice start.

Agree. I've called for him to get a regular shot for a long time, but now he's had it, so it's over. Keep him as the 4th OF, start Pods in CF while we're in contention this year, and get someone here in 2010. The last thing I'll say is I hope when D2 gets here we don't give him the BA treatment, where we say he's a starter and is there for his D, and then turn around and throw him under the bus. I hope the Sox have learned from the BA experience so that the next time we bring up a top CF prospect we have a resolution one way or the other much sooner. The 4 years straight of questions in CF has not been fun.

Yeah I've been a de facto "Anderson supporter" since I was in the camp of "give him extended playing time to see where he's at." Well he looked like he was going to do something for a while but he's back in the .230s with no power. So the answer is "no" after all. That's fine I guess. All I wanted was an answer and we couldn't get that with him sitting on the bench.

Yep! Enough is enough. Anyway no matter if he stays in Chicago or not he will be playng baseball. He does have talent and can contribute. Defensively he is better than anyone else we have in the OF that I can think of anyway.

His defense is so good it's hard to believe. I hope we keep him as a backup outfielder, defensive replacement. I wonder why he's such a wreck at the plate? Is his approach awful? His stance? When he's up there, he looks like a pitcher hitting. If I had to pick between him and Wise, I'd pick BA as our super sub.

FWIW, his UZR/150, after starting off below average this year, has been climbing towards his 2006 number.

Defensive stats in general tend to be questionable early in the season. Just not enough events in the denominators.

I have a feeling it comes down to whether Oz prefers Brian's defense or Wise's speed as a backup outfielder and Wise's speed will win out. That's dumb, though. BA's defense is more valuable than Wise's speed.
