Jenksismyhero
So my Iphone 3gs is due to arrive today. It's my first introduction into the Iphone world. Does anyone else here have one, and if so, what are some of the apps I should get for it? And your thoughts on using it?
FlaSoxxJim
I have the last gen and love it, but man do I want one that can do video and cut/paste. Only advice on apps is to take time to look through all the free ones before you start spending wads of money. There are some brilliant free apps and most games have free demos that you can usually play until you get bored and save your money.

You can't get video, but the cut/paste should be included in the 3.0 update. Have you done that yet?
Steve9347
I'll tell you what... Apple does a great job with their advertising. "I want video and cut-and-paste", just like their commercial told you to. FYI, the Palm Pre already has both functions. Unfortunately, the EAS support is really poor and it's pissing me off. almagest
The Blackberry Storm has both functions as well, and with the recent firmware update, has become a really nice phone. You lose wi-fi, but Verizon's 3G network is leaps and bounds better than AT&Ts, so you don't mind it as much. The Iphone still has the best software support, though. Y2HH
I have had an iPhone (edge), and iPhone 3g, and now I have an iPhone 3GS -- my previous models became hand me downs to my wife. The following apps are the apps that I consider "best in class", and if an app listed costs $ while there are free alternatives, I've tried all the free alternatives before I decided which was better. News Apps: AP Mobile (FREE) USA Today (FREE) WeatherBug Elite (Maps in motion, audio/video forecasts, wind speed, etc.) (.99cents) Entertainment Apps: Now Playing (Movie Show times, Locations, Reviews, Etc.) (FREE) ESPN SportsCenter (FREE) Facebook (FREE) AOL Radio (Live broadcast of Local/Domestic radio stations) (FREE) Pandora (Internet Radio) (FREE) Security Apps: 1Password (I'm a MAC user so I pay for the desktop version which synchs to my iPhone, this is a password encryption program) (FREE for iPhone edition) Misc Apps: 9-Toolbox (Contains a Level, Currency Converter, Tip Calculator, Units of Measurement Converter, etc. (FREE) AIM (FREE) Rooms (IRC Chat) (This was like .99cents, but it may cost a few dollars these days.) Flashlight (Why the hell not?!) (FREE) Remote (Remote control iTunes from your phone) (FREE) Shazam (Ever wonder what that song was?! Hold the phone to the speaker and this app will tell you it's name, album, etc.) (FREE) Games: Some of these may be slightly cheaper or more expensive at this time, as the prices change due to sales, etc. Flick Fishing ($4.99) Texas Hold'Em ($4.99) Paper Toss (FREE) PinBall Dreams ($4.99) PegJump (FREE) Peggle ($4.99) MLB Slugger ($4.99) StoneLoops ($2.99) As for using it, I've used just about every cellular phone in existance (I'm a big cell phone nut), and I think the iPhone is again, the best in it's class. I also have a BlackBerry for work, and wish I could just use my iPhone instead. I've had multiple palm devices, multiple winmo devices, and I feel the iPhone is superior. I'm not an Apple loyalist, either...as I have 2 windows vista laptops (dell), 1 windows xp laptop (lenovo) and my iMac, so please -- don't go there. Steve9347
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 01:29 PM) I should have checked here first but I asked about the Pre in the catch all thread. Overall what do you think of it? The Pre is awesome. It has tons of features. The only thing lacking is EAS Support, so make sure your company has an active SSL Certificate for EAS based email if that's how you roll. Other than that, no complaint. I've used a PRE, it's, IMO, the only device that competes with the iPhone. I still feel the iPhone is better (but it has 3 years of polish on it), and the PRE needs more work, but it's "there", unlike anyone else. Jake
Do any of the iPhone alternatives, like maybe the PRE, not have the big data charge associated with them?

All internet based phones will have some sort of data charge for them, but the PRE (Sprint) charges less than AT&T does.
FlaSoxxJim
Need to add that for out-of-market baseball fans. the iPhone MLB At Bat app is the world's best bargain at $10. Every radio feed for every game streamed right to your phone, plus game summaries, box scores, in-game video highlights, etc.

So even if unlimited internet is part of your plan, you still have to pay extra?

Well, you can get the "Everything 450" plan through Sprint, which gives you 450 anytime minutes, and free nights starting after 7 and free weekends, as well as everything else for $79.99. Also, just tell them you work for GM or Blockbuster (they don't verify) and you can get 20% off every month.

I pay 55 a month for my sprint data plan and phone and have 750 minutes and unlimited everything data (including texts) plus the standard unlimited nights and weekends. Therefor, there is no f***ing way I'll ever get an iphone and basically pay double what I currently do.

Y2HH
I also get 19% off my AT&T bill through a work discount, so my iPhone bill isn't that bad -- then again, I'd still pay it. My windows mobile phone on Verizon cost more than my iPhone on AT&T. Either way, not a big fan of Sprint, and I have no complaints paying what I pay, either. I'll be downloading most, if not all of these. I grabbed the MLB app. Can't wait to hear Farmer and DJ while at work. So far I'm very pleased. The voice command feature works really well and the camera/video is a lot better than the 3g (which my fiance has). Obviously it's not a substitute for a digital camera, but it's still nice when you want to take a random picture. Now ATT just needs to turn on mms for the iphone. I'll most likely be getting a Pre when I can upgrade in a couple of months. I like that Sprint is offering upgrade eligibility after a year, and Sprint prices are tough to beat with how easy it is to get a corporate discount for a company you don't work for
