ChiSox_Sonix
Ok so earlier this week one of my friends proposed an idea to go to South Bend for a ND game Labor Day weekend (i have a few friends who are big ND fans). Being as I've never been out that way I was able to convince everyone to agree to go into Chicago the next day and go to the White Sox game (to my amazement). So I'm pumped as it's the first time I'll be there. Been to a bnuch of Sox games on the East coast but this'll be first time in Chicago. So anyways, I have a bunch of questions and I could probably find a bunch online but figured this was easier and probably better. So any help would be greatly appreciated. It's still 6-7 weeks away but we're going to do some planning/booking soon. So here goes: - We plan on driving from NY to Michigan City on that friday (stopping in Cleveland on the way)...that's where we're going to stay and come back to NY on Monday. Anyone from that area have recommendations on where to stay? I know there's a couple casinos out there but I'm sure there are better places to stay. Also, we're all early-mid 20's, where would be a fun place to go out Fri/Sat night? I'm hearing the Casino in New Buffalo is very nice. - For the ND game on Saturday. When do people usually start tailgating? Is there an easy way to get there from Mich City? Train/Amtrak/Bus or should we drive? Like is the traffic gonna be ridiculously nuts? - On Sunday when we go to Chicago we were gonna take the train in from Mich City. Is there an easy way to get to the Cell that way. Amtrak runs out there, can we take that in? And for a 3 o'clock game when should we leave? And does the train run back out there afterwards? - If we have a group (8-10) is there a way to get a group rate for tickets and where (section) does everyone recommend we get tickets in? Also, what are the good places to grab a drink/food before and after the game. I know it's a ways away still but we will probably be buying the ND tickets, Sox tickets and hotel rooms within the next couple of weeks. Everything else I could ask again as we get closer to going. Also, are the time zones in those places all the same, because I know there are some oddities out there concerning them. Any input will be greatly appreciated. I'd love to spend more than a day in Chicago but I'll settle for this. Thanks again.
knightni
Hotel rooms average $200-$300 a night on ND weekends around South Bend - I'd suggest finding a semi-expensive room in Michigan City or Chicago. You can take the South Shore train from Michigan City to South Bend, then a taxi to campus. There is some tailgating south of the stadium, but ND has really cut down on the land for tailgating - they've been building things. You can also take the South Shore from South Bend or Michigan City to Chicago. Tickets... try Stubhub. It's too hard to get tickets around the campus without getting busted for scalping. If you take the South Shore to Randolph Street/Millennium Station, you can get on the orange or blue lines from there and transfer to the red line to US Cellular Field. knightni
Chicago and Michigan City are on Central time, South Bend is on Eastern time.

ChiSox_Sonix
QUOTE (knightni @ Sep 5, 2009 -> 11:57 AM) How'd this work out? It was awesome. 11 hour drive kinda sucked but on the way out there we gained an hour back. Didn't realize Mich City was in CTZ. Went to the casino friday night (won $150), ND game on saturday and White Sox game sunday. The band at the casino was from the Southside and they played the Sox theme song from a couple years back at one point. ND experience was awesome. What a beautiful campus. Also very cool to see the Sox, even though they lost. Went to the Bullpen Sports bar for a few innings too, that was a fun time. Beer/food prices there were much better than what I expected. Got some free shots from a bartender cuz she felt bad about forgetting our bill for so long. Afterwards we walked around parts of Chicago and also Navy Pier. Had a local beer at the pier (Goos Island) that I thought was really good. Didn't get to spend a ton of time there but it seemed like a great city. The whole weekend it was just such a nice and refreshing experience to see people in White Sox gear. Totally not used to seeing that.
