Yes, that does sound like it was on the lower end of the scale in terms of starting rehab. I would like to know why rehab is expected to take 4+ months though.

Most likely. The tear was either off the bone or near the terminal end of the tendon.

That is actually a fairly short course of rehab for this extensive damage. The reason it takes time is its important function in supporting the arch. There are two factors here.

 

1) With 5-7 weeks of rest the tendon will become very weak. The strength of the tendon will increase as stress is added and strengthening of the muscle begins. It takes at least 6 weeks to add true strength to the muscle so as its strengthening the tendon will as well. So, its 6 weeks to increase strength and the rest to regain baseball activities.

 

2) There is also regaining the proprioception which is the body's unconscious awareness of control. When you tear this tendon that is vitally important in foot control he will lose this control. He is going to need to re-learn this control. Balance training will be the focus here. The time table for this part is variable but should fit in this rehab schedule.

Mitchell played in the AFL, which is really all most people wanted to see. His numbers were less than spectacular though.

After a terrible start, Jared Mitchell is starting to regain his batting stroke that made him a first-round pick of the Chicago White Sox in the 2009 draft.

 

Mitchell had a nine-game hitting streak end Friday night for Class-A Winston-Salem in a 10-0 victory over Frederick. Mitchell batted .353 with four doubles and one triple and stole four bases during the streak.

Let's be honest...for a "Raw, athletically gifted OF", there pretty much was nothing worse that could possibly happen to him on a baseball field than the injury he suffered. Right at the year when you're pushing him upwards and expecting to see development, you get a 1-2 year complete setback that maybe never fully recovers.

Wasn't the best weekend for Jared. I believe he pulled an 0/5 yesterday, and took a walk but got picked off the day before.

 

He's not a physically imposing guy but you can see him getting quickly down the line. He definitely worked the count well, and made some contact, but it wasn't enough to really push it to the wall. I believe there were more than a few fly balls in that mix. I'd like to see him hitting the ball more on a line drive/hard grounder to take advantage of his speed.

From Seedlings to Stars:

 

Notes – Few players in the minors came out of the chute as hot as Mitchell did and he wound up hitting 0.341/.471/.561 with 5 2B, 5 3B, 1 HR and 6 SB. In the process he showed a flash of the dynamic player the White Sox drafted out of LSU three years ago. The spring training ankle injury that cost him all of 2010 and his 183 SO in 129 games in 2011 gave many enough reason to jump off the bandwagon but I have continued to be a believer in his future and significant upside since he was in college. For those 24 games in April, Mitchell had me feeling pretty good about my evaluation skills, and of course he certainly caught the attention of the White Sox fan base with his performance.

 

Unfortunately the months that followed have not gone as smoothly and his K% has ballooned from 20.6 in April to a staggering 41.2% so far this month. If you’re wondering, that’s not a typo. Mitchell has struck out 35 times in 19 July games and has a 0.174/.318/.449 slash line to go with it. Some of that can be written off as sample size and statistical aberration. After all his LD% is far more likely to be closer to the 19.0% he has on the season overall than the 9.4% he had with the Barons in July. And while, yes, he’s going to continue to be a strikeout machine barring some significant improvement in that part of his game, he’s not going to go down on strikes 2 out of every 5 at bats going forward.

 

Speaking of needed plate discipline improvement, it is worth pointing out that 62 BB in 95 games is an indicator that his is making strides. In fact his BB% – currently at 15.0% – is up over 5 points from the 9.6% it was in 128 games last season.

 

The White Sox curiously (by my estimation) promoted him to Triple-A Charlotte yesterday so we’ll see how he handles facing International League pitching. If he can get hot again for an extended stretch like he was to start the season it’s not out of the question that Mitchell could wind up with 20 2B, 20 3B, 20 HR and 20 SB this season. That would be quite the rare accomplishment considering only four players since 1901 have pulled that off at the major league level and it’s obviously not a frequent thing in the minors.

Mitchell would be in the same company as players who struck out in 40% of their Double A at bats. That's a long list of guys that went on to flip burgers for a living.

I'm really trying to put in a lot more effort into following the prospects and I'm confused why people are so high on Mitchell (top 10 in the organization). Sure he's got speed, but it seems like he has lost a step after the injury.

Speed: Lost a step with injuries and added mass on frame. More of a solid-average runner and likely average runner long term. Speed doesn’t play well on the bases. Lacks instincts to be significant stolen base threat. Not the speed guy that was drafted.

 

Also, it doesn't look like he hasn't batted his way into the top 10. Last year, he had a line of .237/.358/.420. Also, his K% from last year was above 30%.

 

So am I missing something here or is he just rated high because people believe he has a high ceiling or what?
