The Dodgers are working on a major blockbuster.

Latest MLB buzz

Jarrod Washburn Trade buzz: What's going down as the MLB trade deadline draws near? Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi have all the latest news and notes.

The team is discussing a deal that would bring Padres first baseman Adrian Gonzalez and closer Heath Bell to Los Angeles for first baseman James Loney and a package of young players, according to major-league sources.

A separate deal for Bell without Gonzalez also is a possibility, sources said.

If the Dodgers acquired Gonzalez, they presumably would send first baseman James Loney to the Padres or trade him somewhere else.

The Angels also are talking to the Padres about Bell, and the Cubs and Marlins are also known to have interest.

If the Dodgers acquired Bell, they would effectively load up their bullpen and rely less on their starting pitchers to pitch deep into the games.

The Dodgers obtained Orioles closer George Sherrill on Thursday. Bell and Sherrill would serve as setup men for Jonathan Broxton.

Gonzalez is hitting .252 with 28 home runs and 59 RBIs in 103 games for the Padres this season. Bell has 25 saves and a 2.01 ERA in 38 appearances.

WTF!? Reports are the Red Sox are trading Adam LaRoche for Casey Kotchman. Red Sox have to be giving up a prospect as well because a straight up swap would be beyond idiotic by the Braves.

This deadline is really f***ed up compared to previous years. A lot of moves are being made that makes you stop and say to yourself "WTF!?"

Diamondbacks To Sign Daniel Cabrera?

By Eddie Schmid [August 2 at 12:41pm CST]

According to Mario Rojas at Candela Deportiva, the Diamondbacks have signed pitcher Daniel Cabrera to a minor-league deal. Nick Piecoro at the Arizona Republic talked to Cabrera's agent, who said that there are "active discussions" going on, with both sides trying to hammer down whether it's a major-league or minor-league deal, and that nothing is official just yet.

Cabrera had been designated for assignment by the Nationals in May after posting a 5.85 ERA and 16/35 K/BB ratio in 40 innings. He had signed a one-year, $2.6MM deal with the Nationals before the season.
