Bryce Brown, shown at a March 16 press conference announcing his intent to play football at Tennessee, is being investigated by the NCAA about an eligibility issue. The NCAA is investigating the freshman tailback's amateur status.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin says the NCAA is investigating an eligibility problem involving freshman tailback Bryce Brown.

At issue is Brown's amateur status as a high school athlete, a person familiar with the investigation told the Associated Press. The NCAA is reviewing whether money was raised for Brown to visit colleges during his sophomore year. Tennessee was not recruiting Brown then, according to the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.

CAMPUS RIVALRY: More on the Bryce Brown saga

"I think it's a gigantic distraction. I think it's very unfortunate," Kiffin said in announcing the investigation after Tuesday's practice.

The investigation has nothing to do with Brown's recruitment by Tennessee or any other school or his grades, Kiffin said.

Brown was recruited out of Wichita, as one of the top high school prospects in 2009 and committed to the Volunteers after letting a scholarship offer from Miami expire.

He's spent significant time playing with the first team offense during fall camp, and Kiffin has repeatedly praised his progress.

"I think Bryce had a great last four practices before (Tuesday), capped off with a great scrimmage," Kiffin said. "He didn't have very many big holes when he was running. He made a lot out of a little, and he was extremely physical."

The investigation isn't keeping Brown from practicing with the Vols for now, though a minor hip injury has. Brown left practice on Monday after a special teams practice period, though an MRI of his hip on Tuesday morning was negative.

Brown didn't practice on Tuesday, but Kiffin said he thought the running back might be able to practice when Tennessee takes the field again on Thursday.

"He couldn't do anything (Tuesday). His hip was pretty tight," the coach said. "Hopefully (Thursday) we'll be able to get some stuff out of him."

Yeah, it's f***ing bulls***. Of course this would happen to us when we finally get a real impact offensive player on the team...

Don't look now but Arthur was recruited in the same situation :-). The Brown's pimpdaddy wanted extra benefits all during their recruitment, and things amped up with Bryce.

I don't follow college football that closley, but I know Florida is coming into the season ranked #1. Assuming Tebow has a season on par with what he has done the last two years, shouldn't he probably go down as one of the best college football players of all time?

Is that hate for Tebow just because he doesn't project well into the NFL?

Pretty much. He might win another Heisman, at least has a real good shot at it, as well as another title.

I don't really care who projects well in the NFL, that's completely irrelevant to how good of a college football player you are.

My buddy who works in the Miami football department told me that the sucker punch rumors are true, some walk on punched him after he got out of the shower. They had apparently been jawing for about a week in practice back and forth. I'm also told Ojomo will be out for "quite a while". He's a pretty good player so losing him sucks for them, especially considering the circumstances.

As for Tebow, he's college football's answer to Christian Laettner.

Heard about that. Read they had a wrestling match a few days earlier and then the walk on came up an sucker punched. He probably would have been starting and to lose him like that hurts. There is some depth at that position so hopefully the others can step up.

Here is my take on Tim Tebow...

Tebow is what college athletics should be all about. He's a quality individual from a quality family. He's intelligent. He's moral. He is the guy most every dad would want his daughter to bring home. He does charitable work, including mission work in foreign countries and truly lives life in the interests of others first (aside from on the field). He's super competitive and extremely talented at what he does.

The problem is, with all the good things he has done, it's ALL we hear about. Every Florida broadcast has to feature all of his good deeds. For three years now (it started before his freshman year actually) every time you turn on a Gators' game, you have to hear about Tim Tebow, the saint. After three years, enough is enough. All I want to do is watch Florida play and have them laud him for his football success and talent. Tell me what he is doing to become a better player and how he is making his teammates better, but don't paint him as a saint and better than life. Anyone that watches a Florida game now should know about Tebow and all his goodness. Let's just get back to freakin football and let him be a great, All-American football player. But in all honesty, I think it is too late for that. He's been built up to superhuman status to the point, I don't think anyone will see him as simply that - human. Which is sad, because as good as he is, he is still a mortal being.

All that said, he is on track to be considered one of the top college players of all time. I agree with Krush. I don't care what he does at the next level. Let's also not forget that others thought he could play in different systems. He strongly considered Michigan, who at the time was all pro-formation offense (also note, Michigan's QB coach and primary recruiter for Tebow is now his QB coach at Florida and has groomed a few NFL QB's). Alabama was probably the runner up for Tebow and with Shula, they were more of a pro set offense. While Mike Shula wasn't a great head coach, he is a well respected offensive coach in the NFL, so he must have seen something. Tebow may just suprise at the next level, but that should have zero effect on his legacy in college.

Theres nothing about Tim Tebow that 'blows'. The kid is a grade A athlete AND person. I don't understand how people can badmouth him. And I am more tired of hearing about Tebow as a South Carolina and SEC fan, than most out of the SEC area. We hear about him ALL.THE.TIME in the south.

If you want to show frustration at someone, blame the press. Tebow just goes out and does what is asked of him, and with pretty damn good ability.

That was my whole point. He should be a guy we all like, but the media constantly putting him up on a pedestal makes people not like him. Which is completely unfair to him. But I don't care. I'm still sick of hear it all. Not that it takes much, but it just makes me want Florida to lose every week even more!

Oh I'd take GREAT pleasure in seeing Florida lose every game this year, we know that won't happen but still. I'll be content if my boys can pull 8 wins out somehow this year, the ole ball coach has his QB, lets see if he lets him run this show.

Agreed. Same thing happened with Hansbrough at UNC. Media slobs all over him and how he works hard, won't be anything at the next level, etc. As a result, people hate Hansbrough. People hate Tebow because it's all they hear about.

Rex you are right. Let's just watch him play football. Isn't that enough joy on a Saturday once you know all about him? Everyone knows it all now.

It just sucks that it's basically taken out on athletes when they aren't really doing anything to deserve it. It's now the cool thing to do to rip Tebow. See: Nitetrain's post above. LMAO.

s***, how cool was that press conference last year after they lost to Ole Miss, and then to follow through on everything? That's the stuff legends are made of.

I can't tell if your posts are sarcastic or not

They aren't. However, it's hard for me to say whether he's the greatest or just somewhat a product of his system/talent around him. There's no denying that Urban's system made Alex Smith look fantastic, and there's no denying Florida has as much talent as anyone in the nation. But, Tebow does have a lot of skill, leadership, and has led his team to fantastic seasons inside the toughest conference in the nation.

Florida's offense would be a lot of fun to watch with a guy like Baylor's Robert Griffin at the helm.
