kapkomet
QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 25, 2009 -> 02:16 PM) I thought about buying AnyDVD, but I figured I'd ask around first. Can you make a .mp4 or .avi out of a decrypted file? LOL. That was my pm. It works great, but I got it back in the day when you didn't have to pay annuals - I got a lifetime license. But what I will do is crawl beneath your house, drill into the floor, use a spy pen camera to locate where your computer room is and where the wires are...drill beneath that, cut into the wire and hax you. I will then post mean things about people on Soxtalk as you, especially Lostfan. RockRaines
I use DVD Cloner to rip dvd's as well as Vuze to convert files to HD for my PS3 as well as IPOD compatible files. I stream it all wirelessly through an old G router with WEP. Drive down madison and I bet you can find my network...

I see it's cheaper than AnyDVD, they have their price in euros and that is really a b****. That'll be a last resort if I have to.

lostfan
So, I'm not an electrician, but apparently there is more than one circuit in my house. The powerline adapter works if you plug it into one on the same circuit, which I did. I moved it to one upstairs and it didn't work. So I took it back to Best Buy and I'm just going to get a wireless N signal booster instead, as per suggestion (those things are kind of rare). almagest
Don't buy a NAS, use that semi-operable desktop you have, add a RAID card and some drives, and install FreeNAS. Saves money; fun project.
southsideirish71
I would try and stay away from repeaters. All you are doing is making your network more complex. I would see if you could pull an ethernet cable from your basement to your middle floor and host your N AP there. N devices usually drive signal pretty good due to the multiple antenna array in each AP. Remember if you are using the 2.4 gigahertz version of N, you are sitting on a limited pool of channels. Only 11 of them ( 3 of which are unique ). So you might want to do a quick site survey around your property and make sure that one of your neighbors isn't overdriving your AP. With it being in the basement you are driving your signal through some dense material. The more layers, the less your signal will propagate. Moving it up to the middle floor, and picking a least congested channel should work for you. As Y2HH said, 5 gigahertz is a nice wide open space with less interference. Too bad most N devices seem to only use the 2.4 gigahertz side of the house instead of being dual banded. I just spent some time at my brothers house who was complaining that his wireless suddenly was terrible. The little old lady next door bought a new G router and used large external antennas to create a large blanket of coverage. She happened to choose an adjoining signal to my brother and basically killed his signal through his house except within 50 feet of his AP. Here is another fun fact. Other things in your house can cause issues with your wireless signal. Use those old 2.4 gigahertz phones. Yeah they use frequency hopping and step all over your signal. Microwaves also throw up a nice interference blast. Powerline devices do work, however they have their limitations. If you have something that uses a lot of power in spikes, say like an Iron. My network used to go up and down the minute the heating element in the iron would power up. For you windows users. Here is a pretty damn good little tool for use for in house surveys. Not only does it give you information with SSIDs and channels, but if you look over to the lower right hand corner. It also shows you what it looks like as far as the channel overlap. And of course it has my favorite requirement for a tool, its free. http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider Edited September 1, 2009 by southsideirish71

Also I just upgraded my network to a LInksys N router with WPA2 protection. It was only 30 bucks on amazon and I have seen great performance improvements in both downloading and streaming media. Actually since I took Y2HH's advice it seems that WPA is much more reliable than what I was doing before and the signal is stronger. I don't know if that's just some weird placebo effect in my head or whatever. I think I've settled on this for my streaming device: http://www.netgear.com/Products/Entertainm...=Specifications

My desktop PC (the one I'm typing on right now, in the basement) is wired and I'd have to buy a receiver for it, or run 2 long ethernet cables. Or a new cable wire for my modem. Either way another cable to go up there with it. On the middle floor the signal is plenty strong. I'm wanting to test how the WPA works with the Xbox (on the top floor) but for whatever reason, I'm having a b**** of a time redoing the Windows Media Center since I re-installed Vista. I don't know what's wrong, it worked fine before but now my desktop knows the 360 is there and asks if I want to configure it but when I start the process with the 360 it can't see my computer. It's pissing me off, doesn't appear to be a firewall thing with my Norton 360 since it worked fine just before and I turned my firewall off and it still didn't work. That was a smooth process at first, now it's a clusterf***.
