very sad news, one of the very best at his job. One of the most disappointing things I have ever watched on TV was when Fox/Joe Buck cut him off at the All Star game in Detroit because Fox wanted to talk about something else. Very classy man and excellent PBP/Announcer

DETROIT -- Longtime broadcaster Ernie Harwell, who spent 42 of his 55 years as a broadcaster calling Detroit Tigers games, has been diagnosed with incurable cancer.

The 91-year-old Harwell, who was in the Tigers' broadcast booth from 1960 until he retired in 2002, remains upbeat after an inoperable tumor was found in the area of the bile duct.

Harwell was given a prognosis of one year, but said that doesn't get him down.

I'm 49 and it just seems that we're losing more and more of the people with whom I grew up. I guess that's a lesson for me. I've always been a White Sox fan (My dad grew up right by the park and I grew up in Rockford.), but have heard Ernie many times "back in the day." That generation of broadcasters was special. They could take me to the game with words alone. I always knew where Ernie's heart was, with the Tigers, but he never made it painful for other fans. Many of today's announcers could learn a bit. He's already missed from Tigers broadcasts and will be missed from this world. I, personally, hope and pray that things go as well as possible for him and for his friends and family.
