Steve9347
Apparently we'll watch our hitters get less than their optimum performances and try to pull the ball for bombs for at least one more year.

Soxbadger
Steve, Come on, I would expect that you wouldn't parrot the nonsense that is on Soxtalk. Walker does not teach hitters to pull the ball, he tries to teach them to use the whole field.

WCSox
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 23, 2009 -> 02:52 PM) Another year of August/September hitting slumps. What does that have to do with Walker? It seems to me that the age of our most productive hitters and the relatively recent ban on greenies and other heavily-used stimulants would contribute to late-year slumps more than anything. kitekrazy
I think most coaches have little effect on veterans. I assume they are there for younger players. It is odd that both Chicago teams have more than their share of power hitters and they all shut off at once. I just hope Beckham doesn't get fence happy. Soxbadger
In my time on Soxtalk, I have never seen 1 credible piece of evidence that suggests Greg Walker has asked players to pull the ball. If he was doing it, then I would agree that perhaps he is not the best hitting coach. I just cant imagine Ozzie, who likes little ball, would have a hitting coach who is teaching the exact opposite approach. (Edit) CQ's babip this year was also .222, as compared to .278 the previous year. Edited September 23, 2009 by Soxbadger
Buehrle>Wood
And once again the only defense of Walker is that we can't get any worse. The defenders need something else here, no doubt.

Soxbadger
lol I think that the defense is more that there is no proof we would get any better with another coach, as there is no evidence that its the coaching that has made the Sox players ineffective. My guess is that my question will go unanswered by the Walker detractors. Can anyone name a Sox player who after leaving Walker did much better? If Walker was the reason the players arent performing, wouldnt it stand to reason that they would do better under another hitting coach? lol Uribe and Swisher? Im pretty sure part of the reason Swisher was traded was because he refused to listen to the coaching staff. Uribe prior to joining the Sox hit .240 and .253. In his first year with Walker he hit .283 with an .833 ops (career high). So not really going to count 1 year of Uribe matching his first year Sox totals. nitetrain8601
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Sep 23, 2009 -> 05:17 PM) Steve, Come on, I would expect that you wouldn't parrot the nonsense that is on Soxtalk. Walker does not teach hitters to pull the ball, he tries to teach them to use the whole field. He tinkers with hitters who don't need tinkering. For example, when Juan was taught the leg kick from Walt Hriniak and Frank, it was working super well for him. Walker told him to stop doing it, presumably for power, and Uribe stopped and sucked again. Also, if he's preaching use the whole field, then the Sox are extra scewed because it means after all these years, he hasn't gotten to the hitters so his voice is none and/or the players don't care what their manager says. Either way, this man should've been gone for awhile.
Princess Dye
The reason for Jermaine Dye's second half collapse is Greg Walker. He started taking his advice at the All-Star break, despite his MVP like numbers, and when straight downhill. The reason for Carlos Quentin's low numbers in 09 is all because of Greg Walker. CQ's great numbers in 08 had nothing to do with Greg Walker. This year, Alexei Ramirez started taking walks and raising OBP. This, however, was not the doing of Greg Walker. Kotsay revitalized his career here, Konerko had a bounce back year, AJP had a career year, Beckham adjusted well to major league pitching. Point being there are sooo many loose ends out there to evaluate, you cant be vitriolic towards Walker. If you feel like it's time for a change of pace, hold that opinion. But you cant really say you KNOW walker is the reason for certain failures. We're not with the team daily. It's not one of the things we can really know. As much as we wish it was.
