NorthSideSox72
I'll try to update this list based on feedback. Based on what we know right now... maggsmaggs
I believe to protect a player, you must place on the 40-man roster, so the only I guy I would place on the 40 would be Hynick. He seems to be a solid bullpen arm, maybe for next year. But the rest of the guys, I really wouldn't shed a tear over if we lost them nor do I think a team would take them and keep them in the majors all year — the only exception is Hynick. The free agents, I would try to resign them all except Lucy, Cannizaro and Wasserman. Edited September 29, 2009 by maggsmaggs
JorgeFabregas
It seems like the White Sox have been talking up Gartrell. I'd be surprised if he wasn't protected. It looks like there are only 3 open spots on the 40-man. I would think that Marquez, Armstrong, and possibly Wise might be somehow jettisoned. Fields also might be traded by December. When does the 40-man have to be set for the draft? How does it relate to free agency--will our FAs (Kotsay, Pods, Castro etc) be either signed or definitively not resigned by then? NorthSideSox72
I'd put as many guys on the 40 as I could fit depending on who is traded or let loose by December (right now there are 3 open slots, and I'm figuring one or two more will open up by then), in this order of preference... Stefan Gartrell Brandon Hynick John Shelby Christian Marrero Tyson Corley Justin Cassel And I'd try to sign these FA's to minor league contracts (which I think keeps them out of the Rule V if they are willing to sign as FA's, but I could be wrong)... Cole Armstrong David Cook Carlos Torres Lucas Harrell Ehren Wassermann Fernando Hernandez Derek Rodriguez
knightni
Torres may have a bullpen job next year. Harrell may be trade bait.
Kenny Hates Prospects
Add this to your current list and it should be the full list. I'm not sure about Luis Sierra though. MiLB/MLB FA: Javier Colina Jared Price Adam Ricks Kyle Aselton Mike Johnston Matt Zaleski Andy Cannizaro Wilson Betemit Keith Ginter Justin Knoedler Miguel Negron Javier Castillo Mike Restovich Eider Torres Kelvin Jimenez Jon Van Benschoten Sergio Santos Ryan Braun David Cook Ehren Wassermann Fernando Hernandez Rule-5 eligible: Robbie Hudson CJ Lang Ricky Brooks Jacob Marceaux Ryan Rote Miguel Socolovich Justin Fuller Michael Grace Salvador Sanchez Luis Sierra?? (signed in '05 at 17, 5 evaluation years) Charlis Burdie Jake Rasner Matt Inouye James Albury Johny Celis Orlando Santos Joucer Martinez Stefan Gartrell Brandon Hynick John Shelby Christian Marrero Tyson Corley Justin Cassel Derek Rodriguez Those on 40-man roster who would qualify: Carlos Torres (MiLB FA) Lucas Harrell (Rule-5) Cole Armstrong (MiLB FA) Jon Link (Rule-5) Clevelan Santeliz (Rule-5) Jeff Marquez (MiLB FA) Jhonny Nunez (Rule-5) Edited September 29, 2009 by Kenny Hates Prospects

Kenny Hates Prospects
Updated list I'll remove those then ...updated again I feel dumb adding guys like Link and Santeliz, but if you're going to add Harrell then you might as well add those guys. None of them will be let go for free unless they're hurt. Marquez should be dropped though. NorthSideSox72
QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Sep 29, 2009 -> 10:46 AM) Updated list I'll remove those then I updated the list in the first post. Burdie is not yet eligible, and I removed a few more that are no longer in the org. I am not sure if JVB is still around.

Burdie is not yet eligible, and I removed a few more that are no longer in the org. I am not sure if JVB is still around. Burdie should be eligible too: http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/p...id=burdie001cha 4 years to evaluate him, began his career at 20 in 2006. The DSL counts too, right? The rules just say "evaluate" so it should. He was still in our system then.
Kenny Hates Prospects
It probably doesn't matter much whether some guys are still here or not, we'd probably have to sift through a bunch of minor league transactions for that (can MiLB FA declare FA at the end of the MiLB playoffs?). It's more or less for completion, and we'll only be talking about a few names in there anyway.

Kenny Hates Prospects
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 29, 2009 -> 11:20 AM) I didn't see the DSL where I looked, so I missed that, but as a foreign signee I am not sure how that works. So, maybe? I think the rules apply to both non-drafted free agents and members of the Rule-4 draft so he should be eligible. But it doesn't matter anyway, he shouldn't be getting claimed unless it is in the minor league phase. I believe someone could claim him but then they would have to send him to AA or higher or else return him. I imagine the claim fees alone will keep a lot of players where they are. Also Burdie and DRod are both Rule-5 guys, not FA. Edited September 29, 2009 by Kenny Hates Prospects
Kenny Hates Prospects
I'd hang on to (and shop): Hynick Omogrosso (if we think he still has a shot at a career) Marrero Gartrell Shelby I'd also look to sign Cook and Sergio Santos. The other guys I'd let look for jobs elsewhere since they won't be getting one here. Anthony Carter, Santo Luis, Miguel Socolovich, Jake Rasner, and Derek Rodriguez would be my picks to be taken. Kenny Hates Prospects
Also, add John Lujan to the MiLB FA list and Santo Luis to the Rule-5 list. I think I added those guys in the other thread but forgot to add them here.

Kenny Hates Prospects
Which ones would you add to the 40-man though, JPN? Most of those guys won't get claimed by anyone anyway, not even in the minor league phase. And I know you like David Cook, but you know the Sox don't, so wouldn't you rather see him get an opportunity elsewhere?
