Will Beckham bring home the Bacon?

Though not a shoe-in as many once thought, I'd still say he'd be the guy to beat with .270 average and close to 65 RBI's in the short time he played. The Beckham hyper machine was in full swing in mid-summer, and all of baseball began to take notice as hopefully we'll have 3B locked up for the next decade.

I think the average falling off, plus not playing the first two months of the season will hurt Gordo.

The fact that he cooled off is key. If he would've finished the season hitting .310 or something, he may have been the front-runner.

I love the fact that this is the second year in a row that we have a ROY candidate. When was the last time an organization did that? Dodger maybe (Karros & Piazza)?

Dodgers had FIVE rookie of the years in a row during that stretch. Karros-Piazza-Mondesi-Nomo-Hollandsworth. How sick is that?

Oakland had back-to-back winners in 04 and 05 (Crosby & Street).

Well, the only way to answer this question honestly is to look at the competition. To me, that's Porcello and Romero.

Porcello, 14-9, 165 IP, 4.04 ERA, 81 SO, 113 ERA+.

Romero, 13-9, 4.30 ERA, 178 IP 141 SO, 102 ERA+.

The reality is, no one really ran away with it. I think Porcello probably should win, but narrowly.

The one other guy worth bringing up might be Andrus. Played a full year, .267 average, 6 HR, .702 OPS, 85 OPS+, but supposedly very good with the glove. I don't think I'd pick him over Becks, but he's in the top 5. I think Porcello, Beckham, Romero, Andrus is probably a good order of finish.

Keep in mind it's two beat writers from each AL city that vote for the top 3.

You'll probably see Porcello, Andrus, and Andrew Bailey get a lot of top 3 votes. I really don't think Beckham will be very close at all. You may see some AL Central writers give Beckham a couple second place and third place votes. Maybe a Chicago voter will give him a first, but he won't be close to winning.

I am taking Bailey, his numbers were sick. And I don't care that he played for the A's or was a reliever, he still was a rookie and the best damn numbers.

Yeah, if they're going to give it to a pitcher it should be Bailey. Porcello, although I think he'll be good overall, wasn't that impressive to me. Even with the 14 wins. I like Romero a lot. But if it's not Andrus or GB, it should be Bailey.

Reimold - .279/.365/.466, 115 OPS+, .365 wOBA, 15 HR, 103 games, 411 PA, -10.7 UZR/150 in LF, 1.0 WAR

Beckham - .270/.347/.460, 106 OPS+, .351 wOBA, 14 HR, 103 Games, 430 PA, -2 UZR/150 at 3B, 2.0 WAR

Andrus - .267/.329/.373, 85 OPS+, .322 wOBA, 6 HR, 145 games, 541 PA, 8.5 UZR/150 at SS, 2.9 WAR

Porcello - 30 GS, 165 IP, 14-9, 4.04 ERA, 113 ERA+, 1.35 WHIP, .270 BAA, 1.62 K/BB, 4.81 FIP, 1.7 WAR

Romero - 29 GS, 178 IP, 13-9, 4.30 ERA, 102 ERA+, 1.52 WHIP, .277 BAA, 1.78 K/BB, 4.34 FIP, 2.9 WAR

Niemann - 30 GS, 180.2 IP, 13-6, 3.94 ERA, 116 ERA+, 1.35 WHIP, .266 BAA, 2.12 K/BB, 4.07 FIP, 3.1 WAR

Bailey - 68 G, 83.1 IP, 6-3, 26 SV, 87% SV%, 1.84 ERA, 226 ERA+, 0.88 WHIP, .173 BAA, 3.79 K/BB, 2.56 FIP, 2.4 WAR

Andrus has a higher WAR because he played about 40 more games than both Reimold and Beckham. WAR also heavily favors defense since it's just straight up UZR, so I wouldn't actually say that Andrus would be better than Beckham if they played the same amount of time at their respective production levels. Niemann is clearly the best starting pitcher. They all pitched similar number of innings and games and Niemann had the best ERA+, K/BB, and FIP. Bailey gets discredited as a reliever with his WAR. But the guy has been very good as a closer.

Honestly, rookie of the year isn't about who's the most valuable player, but rather the best rookie performance. I might have to give it to Bailey.
