We really need to stop counting on Abreu for anything. There is absolutely no way, that if he somehow escapes the Angels' clutches, that he's going to be doing it to sign with the White Sox.

And the further into the playoffs the Angels go, the less chance there is they let Abreu get away. There is a really, really good chance that ship has already sailed.

We will be much better served reserving the DH spot as a utility to give our players rest without taking their bat out of the lineup than locking down the position with a 40 year old albeit still solid hitter.

Most seasons, unless we're wracked by injuries, Ozzie has done a fine job of giving people the rest they need. He probably tends to bench/platoon some people more than he should (although there's the occasion, like Cabrera in 2008 or Konerko in 2005, where he just never sits a guy even when he needs it).

If we can hold Kotsay and Nix spends the offseason working on his defense at SS and 3rd base, we're going to be in pretty good shape with our bench. We still need a starting OF and a DH, but having a guy at DH who also plays the field isn't necessarily the best use of our resources. It could be if we could find the right player, but we shouldn't limit ourselves to that.

Exactly. I hate that theory. Going for a DH who can play the field is just stupid. You have the gift of having a spot in the lineup for a purely offensive player who doesn't need to play in the field. Utilize it. Getting a DH because he can play the field is just flat out dumb. Get the best offensive player you possibly can, whether he can play the field or not.
