Aaron Hill of the Toronto Blue Jays is the best defensive second baseman in baseball.

At least, that is the case if you believe “The Fielding Bible Awards” that will be listed in The Bill James Handbook 2010.

A panel of 10 voters actually rated Hill and Boston second baseman Dustin Pedroia in a tie at their position, but Hill’s four first-place votes gave him the edge over his Red Sox counterpart, who sat atop just one voter’s ballot.

The voters included James, ESPN.com baseball writers Peter Gammons and Rob Neyer and SI.com columnist Joe Posnanski.

Hill actually repeated as the top second baseman. In total, six of the nine honourees were previous winners in the voting that have been handed out each of the past four seasons.

St. Louis first baseman Albert Pujols won for the fourth time while Tampa Bay Rays left-fielder Carl Crawford won for a third straight year while receiving 99 out of a possible 100 points.

Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina, Seattle outfielders Ichiro Suzuki and Franklin Gutierrez were other repeat winners, though Gutierrez took the honour for centre-field after previously winning for his work in right.

Seattle shortstop Jack Wilson, Washington third baseman Ryan Zimmerman and pitcher Mark Buehrle of the Chicago White Sox were the first-time winners.

So do these guys just go off of UZR?

For one; the Fielding Bible is written by John Dewan, the man who developed the plus/minus system believed by many to be on equal grounds as UZR, just not as widely available, so right out the bat - no. The fielding bible awards are determined by a panel of 10 experts chosen by John Dewan using a 10 point scale (100 points possible). They use whatever criteria they see fit to determine the finest defenders at each position and given the wide range of baseball ideology at play here (Gammons and James are basically polar opposites) you're going to have very different determining factors within the panel. It's a fantastic resource that basically came about because the Gold Glove sucks and Dewan felt something needed to be done.

About time. Mark's always been a great fielder and it's nice to see him win an actual award that's actually objective...

He finished 4th in 2007, Bill James and Rob Neyer had him as the 2nd best defensive pitcher in the game (James voted Garland #1 and Neyer went with Santana who ended up winning the award). He also finished 3rd in '06 behind Kenny Rogers and Greg Maddux.

One of the main reasons Dewan started the Fielding Bible awards was because of the historical significance of a top 10 list, years from now you'll be able to get a good grasp on a player's defensive ability by turning to the number of times he showed up in the top 10. You don't get this with the GG awards since only the winner is made public.
