R&B was part of the reason rock today sounds the way it does, I think it'd be pretty silly to exclude it.

That may be true, but I'm trying to concentrate the list down more so that we have some consensus.

Really, R & B is just another categorical name for black led bands. A long time ago there was a distinct difference between black and white music. As the years went by, particularly in the 60s, the line was blurred. For example, R and B should be a label associated with bands such as The Yardbirds or Led Zeppelin. Their music is heavily influenced by blues, yet no one would immediately consider them R & B because they're not black. It's just rock and roll.

I know what you mean though, these lists should be simple and not go into all the different subcategories of rock and roll. I don't believe it'll be an issue though.

All I mean is that I don't want Usher and Mariah Carey in a list meant for AC/DC and Deep Purple.

I can agree with Earth, Wind, & Fire, Parliament Funkadelic, even the Commodores or Kool & The Gang, but I don't want modern non-rock singers/bands in the list.

Technically two different bands, and damnit, I forgot about both of them. I'm ashamed of myself :(

They're both George Clinton bands and I think they both played shows together, but they both have their own catalog of music :P (although I suppose it looks like Rolling Stone has lumped them together in top band lists before, so maybe that works too)

It was a record label thing, Parliament and Funkadelic were the same band, same lineup, recording under two different names on two different labels.

Not to continually armchair quarterback this thing, but i also believe the list needs to be broken up by decade. Cause it's kind of unfair that Green Day and Nirvava etc. are going up against Dylan and The Beatles etc.

Seems like there's gonna be a big generational gap in this list.

Couldn't agree more. But, hey it's just for fun.

Nirvana made my list and was fairly high.

Green Day, on the other hand, wouldn't have been in my top 250 :P

The thing to keep in mind is this is a list of FAVORITE bands. Not a list of best or most influential or important...blah blah blah. Therefore, even I won't be upset to see some shi**y screamo deathmetal bands make the list. ;)

my top 5 i think was

Bouncing Souls

Underoath

Gaslight Anthem

From Autumn To Ashes

Rise Against

how many people here have heard of all 5?

HAHA! I've never heard of any of 'em. Ya ever hear of The Litter ? Osibisa? The Frut? Brinsley Schwarz?

I didn't see anything in my message sent folder. I don't think that option is working.

I also struggled with favorite today, or over my life. Prime example was The Who. Back in the 70s I was a huge stadium rock fan and The Who was, by far, my favorite band, no one else was close. I've mellowed so much they barely made the top 10, and if I measured favorite by what I listen to the most now, they would have ranked even lower. So all of that adds flavor to these lists and makes them a lot of fun. Also struggling with bands who changed dramatically over the years. Bands like Van Halen had major changes, but overall, was their music that different? Probably not. Bands like Fleetwood Mac are dramatically different from one line up to another. And some I wish I could put an asterisk next to the name and give eras or dates. Most of you whipper snappers probably do not realize that the pre-disco Bee Gees turned out some very good songs. And finally, I tossed out Simon and Garfunkel as not rock enough, but somehow left in Jackson Browne. I kind of wish I hadn't of done that.

See, this is so hard for old sh*ts like you and me Tex because we've been listening to music for like eighty years and that covers a lot of bands. Remember John Philip Sousa? He had a helluva band.

The cool thing is thinking about the bands we loved that did not pass the test of time. For me I'm thinking of acts like Joe Jackson Look Sharp!. Boomtown Rats. Teenage Radiation, Leisure Suits. Otis Day. No doubt I would have had them in the top 20 at some point.

No kidding. I go back to when I was in my teens and there were lots of Chicago area bands making it big. The Shadows of Knight, New Colony Six, Buckinghams, Cryan' Shames, Ides of March, Mauds, The Flock, and more. Those were my favorite bands once and I nearly put the Shadows of Knight on this list.

Boomtown Rats , I Don't Like Mondays gotta be one of my all time fav songs. This will be a hard list to make. Not even sure one big act from the 90's on will even make it possibly U2 though they started earlier than that.

Uh...this was so difficult. I'm not even sure if my #1, the Beastie Boys, counts as a Rock band. Also, I doubt that half of the artists on my list even make the cut.

Yea they were in my top 5. Of course I'm biased towards Linkin Park.. so sue me. :D :headbang
