chw42
QUOTE (WhiteSoxfan1986 @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 01:36 AM) I know it was discussed when the voting results were announced, but I just wanted to take one last chance to say that it's a joke that Andre Dawson is going into the Hall of Fame. Dawson wasn't a great offensive player. His career wOBA is .352. If .352 gets you into the hall of fame, then there should be a lot of people in the Hall. The thing with him is that he was a great fielder. He has a career total zone of +69. That makes his career WAR at 62, which is almost hall worthy if you ask me. To me, the hall of fame cut-off is 75 WAR. Because if you put up an average of 5 WAR for 15 seasons, you are one of the best the game has seen and you deserve to be in the hall. WilliamTell
Charles Barkley and David Wells are kind of going at it on TBS right now. I thought they were joking with each other first, but I'm not so sure anymore. It's funny though because I can't stand Wells and love Barkley. BigSqwert
Pods hits a HR in Yankee stadium and has 41 RBIs. Still hitting over .300 with a .352 OBP. I still can't stand Pierre even though his defense has been excellent.

Not that I disagree with anything you said, but do you think the voters even know what WAR and wOBA is, let alone use that as a basis, for whether they vote somebody in or not? Sabermetrics have come a LONG way in the last 10 years, but they're not quite yet that mainstream.

Sabermetrics have come a LONG way in the last 10 years, but they're not quite yet that mainstream. And they may never affect hall of fame voting since most of the voters are really old school. But Dawson getting in isn't the worst thing to happen, that's all I was trying to say.
knightni
There are three players in major league history with 400 HR and 300 SB. Dawson is one of them.

You only do things like these when you try to make a case for some guy who really isn't that good. Edited July 25, 2010 by chw42
knightni
Nitpicking? The man was a 500 HR lock before his knees killed his career. The Astroturf in Montreal just cut his time short.

knightni
The one guy who I can see getting in with the veterans' committee years down the line could be Dale Murphy. He was so dominant in the '80s and won a few MVP awards.

The Astroturf in Montreal just cut his time short. You're choosing two stats that made him look good, that's nitpicking. The problem is that his OBP, SLG, wOBA, OPS, all the nice rate stats that are used these days, don't speak so highly of him. Adding in his pretty good defense is what makes a good case for him IMO. But even then, he's no sure-shot candidate.

Rice and Dawson are the two guys in recent memory whose inductions bother me. And when I saw that Dawson had a chance, I thought "If Rice is in, I guess Dawson will get in, too." And the voters won't let Blyleven in.

I personally think Murphy should be in over either of those two. His offensive numbers, when you consider WHEN he played, combined with stellar defense, makes him a better candidate IMO. And Bly should be in, I hope he gets it on this next try.
SoxAce
Buster Posey has a 19 game hitting streak. Man he is just a good pure hitter.. STUD. Hopefully he doesn't have a sophomore slump next year, but I don't think it will be too severe. Dude is just a natural hitter.

Kalapse
Strasburg has been scratched from his start tonight after injuring himself during warm-ups. No word on how serious. Ben Goessling, MASN: Boos for Miguel Batista as he warms up. There's a steady agitated murmur at #Nationals Park right now. 12 minutes ago via TweetDeck And an update: Rizzo said #Strasburg had trouble getting loose in the bullpen. They'll do an x-ray and MRI on his arm. Precautionary for now -- no pain. 3 minutes ago via TweetDeck

Jordan4life_2007
Jose Bautista: 4/4 2 HRs tonight. The Blue Jays announcers were saying that the Jays shouldn't trade Bautista for anything less than 3 blue-chip prospects. I almost choked on my own saliva when I heard that. Oh, Buster Posey is good. RBI double off of Josh Johnson. 20-game hitting streak now.
