Leonard Zelig
Cardinal fans are very loyal but i don't know how they would react to trading Pujols. Howard is from here, but I still can't see it happening.
knightni
Would the Braves have traded Hank Aaron? Would the Giants have traded Willie Mays? Would the Yankees have traded Mickey Mantle? Pujols is in rare air, IMO. The fans in St. Louis would be seriously pissed off. When Pujols hits 36, 37 is about the only time that I could see him leaving, ala Frank Thomas after 2005. The difference between your first contracts and your superstar contracts now is so expansive, that it is much harder for small to mid market teams to hold on to their superstars because they can take up such a huge chunk of their payroll, they are rendered impotent to spend. Felix
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 14, 2010 -> 05:51 PM) Ryan Howard for Albert Pujols trade talks? Non-story. The Cardinals would never do that. QUOTE (MattZakrowski @ Mar 14, 2010 -> 08:00 PM) What's with the slight-moderate upgrade at the same position trades from Philly? A Beckham-Utley swap can't be far off. I'd say the upgrade from Howard to Pujols is more than a "slight-moderate upgrade." It's a pretty significant one, which is really a testament to how good Pujols actually is. Yeah, except none of those teams had to deal with free agency thanks to a little thing called the Reserve Clause. It was a lot easier for teams to retain their best players in the 50's when they held the rights to said player from the day they signed their first contract 'til the day they died. HuskyCaucasian
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 15, 2010 -> 01:03 PM) There are some new rules coming online in baseball this year to try to continue cutting down the number of exploding and splintering bats that we see. Beginning this year, minor league ballplayers who are not on their team's 40-man roster and have no major league experience will be banned from using bats made from certain types of maple which have proven especially prone to breaking, including varieties such as sugar maple, red maple and Russian maple. In fact, the 30-plus companies authorized to manufacture bats for professional baseball will now be mandated to use only North American Rock maple. (Take that, you subvervise Commie/ Socialist batmakers trying to undermine our American pastime!) Of course, one of the most interesting things to come out of this ongoing bat caper is the fact that MLB decided to not publish the 50-page report that has led to the new manufacturing edicts. Meaning you've either got some laudable environmental printing concerns at work here - or, perhaps just as likely, some baseball folks who'd prefer no one question precisely where all the mandated maple comes from (otherwise known as the "Kickbacks for Brushbacks" agreement). The other interesting thing to come out of all this is that any major leaguer whose bat broke in pieces more than ten times last year will have to meet with a panel of union and bat experts for a consultation to see if any further measures need be taken to hold down the number of broken bats in that player's future. Jordan4life_2007
D-backs lock up Mark Reynolds through 2013 ('13 being a team option). http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20...sp&c_id=mlb I like how they're locking up their young stars. Balta1701
The Blue Jays outbid the Yankees and a couple others to sign Cuban defector Adeiny Hechevarria, a shortstop, for $10 million. The Blue Jays made a strong bid to try to sign Aroldis Chapman and are a big player in the international market. The New York Post first report Hechevarria was close to going to the Jays while SI's Melissa Segura reported there was an agreement, pending a physical. I'd imagine it's a similar deal to Alexei/Viciedo, just with differing on how many years of arb-eligibility it may buy out.

Balta1701
I haven't been watching the TV version much since there's a better option, but has anyone else felt this year like ESPN.com is putting out quite a bit more quality articles on the non-Boston/NY teams than they have in years past? ThunderBolt
The Nat's released Elijah Dukes. Riggleman claimed that it was "baseball related." I think there's more to this story.

I think there's more to this story. There's no "baseball related" reason on their roster to release him. The only replacements on their roster as OF's are Justin Maxwell (Kinda young, career .793 minor league OPS), Chris Duncan, Willie Harris (group 4!), Willie Taveras, or moving another player there. This is shockingly irresponsible on multiple levels. I like Wash, but his ass needs to be fired for this.
