Blanco is a lefty now?

No, but I see AJ as one of our most "tradeable" pieces. If he were to go, we can free up some cash to address this offense through FA. Also, based on the numbers Flowers has put up in the minors, there's a reasonable chance starting him will upgrade our offense from the catcher's position. Blanco as a defensive specialist makes a good backup and mentor to Flowers for the part of his game that needs more polishing

this means nothing for flowers IMO...the organization is still comitted to AJ, and I dont think the organization wants flowers to play once every 5 days.......Flowers should start the season at AAA probably anyways.....they need a backup and blanco fits perfectly

I like Blanco as a backup, and this does kinda of raise suspicions for Flowers being on the trading block (or staying in AAA to net more value)

Also, what does Cowley say when this comes up?

"In other news "Carlheartscubs'' has learned that Bradley is a problem. Paul Sullivan to write a full follow-up this afternoon. Can't wait."

Yup, something about a completely other team.

Well wish we woulda done this 2 years ago, but I always liked Blanco's defense, arm and game calling. It'll be interesting to see how he handles the bat here in the more superior league, even as a part time player. Ramon Castro didn't exactly do too well when he came here compared to his Mets days. IF Flowers is traded/org. wants him to get a bit more time in AAA, then I would not mind Blanco at all, especially defensively (hopefully he's at least serviceable with the bat as a backup player).

it will be interesting to see how it shakes out. If the Sox trade Flowers in a deal, not necessarily the A-Gon deal, but something, then Blanco makes perfect sense, or it makes sense if they don't trade him and Flowers will play full time at AAA instead of spot duty in MLB.

With AJ you need a veteran catcher who is good defensively and is OK playing 1-2 games a week, which Blanco fits.

Trading Flowers means that the pressure is turned on Phegley in a big way. The issue here is that do we think Phegley will be ready in two years? He's certainly not ready now, and he's far from a sure thing. So, we trade Flowers and where are we? Are we comfortable with being left with the Cole Armstrong's and the Donny Lucy's of the world? We finally have the next big thing, why let it go to waste?

If Flowers gets us the right pieces elsewhere, it may be worth it. And I don't think anyone sees Armstrong or Lucy as future starters. I'm not even sure Lucy is considered as a backup possibility anymore, he just hasn't been the same since his injury, and was bad even in AA last year. Armstrong as a backup to Flowers or someone else, maybe, at best.

Phegley still seems like he is a few years away, even if things go well. Miguel Gonzalez is even further away, and I think Dubler has fallen off the radar entirely.

AJ is still a pretty decent option at C, and I'd be willing to sign him for another couple years, if trading Flowers gets us a serious upgrade elsewhere.

If they do sign Blanco I'd say it's a much safer bet to assume Flowers will start the year in AAA rather than as our DH. If that does happen I'd hope we keep in Charlotte until June (like Beckham this year) and if he is producing and appears ready then we could call him up after the magic date and save another year of his services,

That's the rub. Flowers needs to catch to get better. With AJP behind the plate, unless he gets hurt, and he's never been on the DL, he's going to catch 120-130 games. That would pretty much be a wasted year for Flowers if the Sox view him as a catcher down the road. Its a pretty rough decision, but if AJP were to go down, Flowers would leapfrog Blanco. I was hoping Blanco signed last year. He may have one more year left in him.

Exactly and AJ will catch at least 125 plus games in 2010. Doesn't give Flowesr much seasoning. I also completely disagree with him being the DH as that doesn't do a thing for his catching ability

Helping the Sox win matters more, and if he ends up doing some DHing during the season to do that, then by god that's what is going to happen.

Not if you look at the big picture. Floewers is not needed at DH as we have other possible options who are better suited for that job. Flowers needs to learn to catch and step in when AJ is gone and you don't do that in the DH spot

Flowers may inevitably be the best option for the Sox. That's all I'm saying, and if that's how Kenny and Ozzie feel, that's how it's gonna happen.

Who are these other options? Mark Kotsay would be terrible and I can't even think of another player you could possibly be referring to. Right now, Flowers is the best in-house candidate for the job. Hopefully KW will sign a better hitter to be our DH, but if not, I don't see how you go with anyone other than Flowers.

Blanco makes sense on a 1 year deal regardless if the Sox keep Flowers IMO.

Tyler's probably just about ready, but he'll get regular AB's in Charlotte, as opposed to only playing about 30% of the games if he was with the Sox (that's if he's not the DH).

But KW may decide to try and sell high on him, as he has done with so many prospects in the past.

Ozzie could finally get his third catcher later this year..... they could call up Flowers and then stretch the versatility of several of their guys. Flowers could be a part time DH this way.

Lillibridge can play all over. Nix has played OF...Retherford has played all over the place

Alexei can move around to different positions in an emergency.

And it should be interesting if they ever stick Beckham at 3rd against certain lefties. My guess would be Nix plays 3rd in those situations though......and I dont know if i like it
