scenario
Who will be added to the 40 by Friday (tomorrow) to be protected from the draft? Players who must either be protected/exposed include: Stefan Gartrell John Shelby Jr. Matt Long Justin Cassell Brian Omogrosso I suspect the Sox will protect Gartrell, Shelby, and maybe Cassell. Doubtful anyone will take a flyer on Omogrosso for next year given his injury. Please add anybody I missed...
Chisoxfn
I think shelby and long will be protected. Probably Gartrell and Cassel as well. I wouldn't protect those guys though as I don't think they'd stick on another major league team for a full-season. Long and Shelby have the best potential of that group. Omogrosso would be right there with Long/Shelby, but he's hurt and who knows if he'll recover.

scenario
Other Possibles? (not sure whether they are eligible, but think they probably are) Christian Marrero Anthony Carter Ryan Rote Israel Chirino Tyson Corley Lee Cruz Matt Inouye and a few other players in the lower minors
JorgeFabregas
How many spots are available on the 40-man? The Teahen trade freed one up, no?

(not sure whether they are eligible, but think they probably are) Christian Marrero Anthony Carter Ryan Rote Israel Chirino Tyson Corley Lee Cruz Matt Inouye and a few other players in the lower minors Pretty sure Matt Innouye left the organization already. If Corley or Marrero really need protecting, I'd choose them over most of the ones mentioned at the beginning of this thread. But I do like Gartrell, I really think people are missing the boat on him.
JorgeFabregas
Weren't there some indications that the White Sox were high on Gartrell or at least are hyping him (ie Phil Rogers article)? I doubt they'd leave him unprotected.

Balta1701
The rule 5 draft is the one where you have to keep the player on your roster for a full season to keep him, correct?
ThunderBolt
I'm very interested in seeing if Kyle McCulloch gets claimed. I think he will on 1st-round pedigree alone, but by whom?

I think he will on 1st-round pedigree alone, but by whom? I doubt it. He's not worth the roster spot for any team, especially one that is bad enough to even think about playing him. Kenny Hates Prospects
There was another thread here that NSS posted which had the full list plus updates by JPN and others of guys who were gone. I tried searching for the link but it looks like it went down the memory hole.

Kenny Hates Prospects
The 40-man is at 32 right now and that includes both Cole Armstrong and Jeff Marquez. The Sox can add a few players and if they need more room later it won't be a problem. Marrero, Shelby, and Gartrell should be on there. There are a couple others I'd like to protect but forgot. ThunderBolt
The White Sox have room to gamble on a kid this year, though i doubt they will. If we want to invest in a kid from the Rule 5 draft we have an available bench spot and a spot in the pen. This is assuming of course that these holes aren't filled externally. I wouldn't be shocked if our pick was a raw pitcher to stick into the pen ala Johan Santana.

When the list of available Rule-5 guys comes out I think our org will be scouring it for lefties. Of course the same thing applies to almost every other org in baseball, but still, we may actually pick someone up this time around.

That was my thought too if we find a kid with sustained velocity and even a lick of control out of left hand, he's going to be a "Coop can fix him" type of guy

Tsk tsk, Patrick. Yeah, I was slacking... I was just doing a quick review of the 2005-2006 draft lists and grabbing names to get the post up there. I knew the list wasn't right and figured someone would correct it for me. So, thanks for doing it.
