The Chicago White Sox, who acquired starter Jake Peavy and outfielder Alex Rios over the summer, are staying away from free agency, White Sox Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf says. They already are close to their 2010 budget, Reinsdorf says, particularly after adding $117.3 million worth of contracts in the two players. "We signed our free agent already," Reinsdorf says. Now I know we can make some trades, but wouldn't we have to replace the people we trade with free agents? I think he's basically saying we don't have the budget to make another big splash and that ultimately if we make a splash it will be via the trade front. I still expect us to maybe sign one or two guys that ultimately get non-tendered or left out on the market. We could get more aggressive if the club is able to free up payroll via trade. Only starter i see maybe being traded is konerko and if hes traded it more than likely means we have adrian gonzalez comin our way. Also rios in the 9 hole? yes he had a bad stint with us but i have a feeling hes gonna turn it around and were gonna see him planted firmly into the 5 or 6 hole. Not to mention Ozzie has already said (and i fully agree) that he will not have a 10-15 million dollar player batting 9th in his lineup. The lineup was very inconsistent, and it's a bit unsettling if they come back with the same lineup as last year (obviously, no Dye or Thome, but with a full season of Beckham and now Teahan). I do think they will make another move for a left handed bat, but we'll probably have to be patient because Williams is right in that there will probably be a few guys available at a bargain. I suspect they will add a bullpen arm as well, but, again, they aren't going to get into a bidding war for a reliever that could just as easily be bad as good. I think, barring any trades (which I think will blow this out of the water)....Jenks is the closer, Thornton as the 8th inning guy....Linebrink is here because of his contract, and that leaves probably 4 spots. Randy Williams may make it as a left handed specialist, Daniel Hudson should make it, and Carlos Torres has a chance to make it. That leaves 1 to 2 spots open. Not a great bullpen by any standard, and it may not be very good, but I'm sure Williams expects a lot of quality starts next season, which should leave for a fresher bullpen having to throw less innings. In the end, I still believe they are going to move Jenks for younger talent (or the possibility of a guy he's been targetting on a major league team that isn't making much money), I suspect they will resign Podsednik and then wait awhile to see who their options are for another hitter. I really hope we strengthen the offense to balance out the team. What do you guys think about Marlon Byrd? I read that the Rangers let him become a free agent. He'd probably be somewhere around average for us with the bat, and I'd be willing to take average. That's a 2 year deal for 7 million though. For a Lefty reliever that's about the going rate. If we want to keep Thornton after this season it's going to cost more than that. Say we have 7M to spend this offseason. If you could spend all of that on Nick Johnson, great. But I dont think it's possible. So wait til AJ and Paulie come off the books and then really go for it......dont cut into those future funds now if you dont have to. Also I'm just flat out a Kotsay fan. Looking at his #s against right handed hitting.......even when he was with Boston ....he still has always been able to do that. This wont be terribly popular but you can improve defense by making him an outfielder and putting either Quentin or Pods at DH. Also Flowers can get DH ABs this way.
