Ken Davidoffs twitter saying he thinks the Yankees are eventually going to re-sign Matsui

Interesting. Olney reported today that the Yankees entered contract negotiations with Damon. They can't fit both could they?

I'm guessing Swisher would be gone if they signed both.

^^^ I think they'd move Melky first though.

It's probably mostly posturing, and they'll take whoever blinks first.

I really believe that the Yanks let Matsui go.

They've added Granderson and as long as they re-sign Damon as expected they'll not have a need for another left handed bat and they don't like his defense.

He should be available and I think the Angels would be in on him.

A lot of times, the Angels like to bargain hunt. They got Abreu for like $5-7 mill last year because literally no one else wanted him. There was a report that came out that the Sox were willing to offer him $8 mill on a one year deal, but they couldn't offer it to him because there was no where for him to play (putting two and two together, the plan was to deal Dye to Cinci for Bailey and then sign Abreu, but Cinci backed out because, well, it didn't make sense for them to trade a prospect with upside for a player on the downside of his career with 1 expensive year left).

If it comes down to the Sox and Angels, he'll be in Chicago without a doubt in my mind.

Not doubting you, but where have you seen this?

Studies have been done, though not very in depth, most lean toward hitters doing worse while not playing the field, rather than playing the field. No matter what side of the fence people are on, everyone is cautious, and eagerly awaiting a fully in depth conclusion, one way or another.

I do a valuation based on a multi-step process. The first step is to compare everyone to the same league average for hitting, and everyone to the positional average for fielding.

Then I apply a positional adjustment, which is this in wins:

+1.25 C

+0.75 SS

+0.25 2b, 3b, cf

-0.75 lf, rf

-1.25 1b

-2.25 dh

I reason that I set the DH at 1 win below the 1B, which is about what a bad fielding 1B would be.

Then I add replacement level (per 700 PA or per 162 G):

+2.25

(You can merge the last two steps into 1 if you like, so the C gets a pos+repl adjustment of +3.5 wins and the DH gets a 0 adjustment. I like to keep things separate... if you compare, you'll get numbers that are similar to Dan R.)

Finally, I give a +0.5 wins bonus per 700 PA for DH stats, because it's harder to DH, as per Andy's research in The Book.

Also note that in the THT 2009 annual, I found that catchers need at least a +0.5 win, if not +1.0 win bonus because it's harder to hit as a catcher. At the same time, perhaps my +1.25 positional adjustment is to aggressive, and maybe it should have been +1.00 to begin with.

So, you can make the original chart as +1.00 wins for the C, and then a +0.50 win bonus for catchers who hit.

I haven't decided yet.

****************************************************************************************************

For DH, I treat it similar to a bad fielding 1B: that guy would be -1.0 wins relative to the average fielding 1B, and 1B get a -1.0 win adjustment relative to the "neutral" position. As you can see, that's -2.0, which is what Bonds is (in my estimation). I don't let anyone go below the -2.0 for fielding+position, since any player worse than that (say putting Frank Thomas at SS) would simply be slotted for DH.

For guys who have performance stats *as* a DH (Trafner, Ortiz, etc), they enjoy a 0.5 win bonus, since there's a DH penalty, as noted in The Book. The PH penalty is 1.0 wins, and the DH is halfway between a regular starter and PH.

Source: Angels want Matsui to DH

The Los Angeles Angels are in serious discussions with Hideki Matsui about supplanting Vladimir Guerrero as their designated hitter, a source familiar with the team's thinking told ESPN.com.

well crap. he is by far the best option to us right now IMO.

Nice...

You speak nothing but the truth my friend. That Torii Hunter thing was a kick in the sack of all White Sox fans. I remember waking up that morning and reading that Hunter had signed with the Angels. SEVERAL F bombs were dropped that day...

Tony Reagans seems to be good at one-upping KW. I bet they're friends, but KW secretly wants to punch him in the throat...

Please ignore this post. It has lots of hyperbole and frustration.

LOL. Vlads? Thome? Try Mark Kotsay. And the worst Sox offense of all time.

Ugh. I really wanted Matsui bad. But hey, we have Alex Rios at 10 mil a year.

Take the shotgun barrel out of your mouth and step away from the ledge.
