I still can't belive their f***in suing college kids and s***...Already struggling to pay for colege, now they got to play thousands and thousands of dollars to these f***s... :fyou

The recording industry has launched a sweeping effort to identify and shut down individual song swappers, making good on recent threats to expand its legal battle against copyright theft.

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has now issued more than 911 subpoenas to Internet service providers across the United States, trying to get the names of people still offering music on file-sharing networks such as KaZaA and Grokster.

Today, "Tech Live" brings you the RIAA Hit List, the user names of file traders targeted in the recording industry subpoenas.

Last month, we brought you the story of Jesse Jordan, a 19-year-old college student who became one of the first to be hit with a lawsuit by the RIAA. Jordan settled his case by paying $12,000 to the RIAA.

The following user names were culled from subpoenas filed with the US District Court in Washington, DC. All subpoenas, incidentally, are being served by the Los Angeles law firm of Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp. A total of 253 RIAA subpoenas were listed as of July 22 through the federal court system's paid online database, PACER. The actual subpoenas are available to view online in about half the cases.

The court documents don't show individual users' real names. They do show file-sharing network user names, the user's ISP, the user's IP address, and a sampling of copyright songs the user allegedly made available for download. To date, many ISPs have been contacted, including Pac Bell Internet, SBC, Charter Communications, Comcast, Adelphia, RCN, and Time Warner.

Following is a list of the first user names from our review of the subpoenas.

The RIAA fails to mention that independent bands whose music can also be found online too...their sales are INCREASING.

They fail to mention that almost all the new CD's are like St. Anger in that they suck major balls. The RIAA doesn't want to make CD's affordable. After all, they were nailed for price fixing and then wanna go after kids who don't want to pay artificially high prices. :fyou The RIAA also doesn't want to focus on the fact that the music is less than quality and hence less CD's are being purchased.

mp3 downloading is not a bane of the industry. If kids really like what they hear and like the band so much, they will support the band. I know I first heard a lot of bands because of mp3 and then purchased their CD's because I liked what I heard.

And as Gash so aptly put before.... :fyou RIAA

I was just glad that I wasn't on the list.  Any idea how many downloads you need to get on that list?

I don't want to get sued for 12,000 bucks that would freaking suck.

It sounds like they are going after the big time abusers. There are people with 10's of thousands of files.

Well, i think with over 3 million users on Kazaa, don't think there gonna sue everybody..Uh..That would be ridicules..

I think you have to be file sharing a ton..thousands I say..to be subpoenaed

They're actually suing for alot(a hell of alot more) more then 12 grand..That guy just stttled for 12 grand...

But the guy Jesse Jordan was hit first cause of his site he runs...

And another Q...I was watching a piece about Napster relaunching Napster 2.0 this Christmas(now you gotta pay) and was wondering what was or is the difference between what Napster was doing and what sites like Kazaa is doing? Why did Napster go down and Kazaa continues to thrive?

I never went on napster during its peak, so am a bit lost...

Why did Napster go down and Kazaa continues to thrive?

Napster is dead because the RIAA decided to go after them first.

Then they killed Audiogalaxy ( the BEST p2p system I've used )

Now they've turned their guns on KaZaA.

They just don't get it, that their sales are down becuase they pump s*** out of their hype factory, NOT becuase of file sharing...

So Napster and Kazza are essentially the same sight or pretty much identicals of each other..?

Jesus, there are SO MANY more meaningful reasons for litigation in our country, yet now we are gonna have the RIAA and their zoot-suit lawyers take the $8,000 a year making college students to court and actually try to squeeze out money that they lost by having to pay out for price fixing. Sounds like Nimrod central to me.

Same basic program, just slight differences.

Napster was the blueprint for the p2p programs to follow, such as KaZaA, Limewire, Morpheus, etc.

They all are basically the same.

the RIAA have them all in their sights, I'm sure...
