iamshack
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 8, 2010 -> 08:31 PM) I've been to auctions. People usually don't bid more than what they budgeted especially if what they are bidding for isn't something all that valuable. I don't think Pods is a must-have type of guy or else someone would have paid him more money. How do you have any clue what people have actually budgeted for when they go to auctions, Dick? Dick Allen
QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 8, 2010 -> 07:39 PM) How do you have any clue what people have actually budgeted for when they go to auctions, Dick? I know several people who go to auctions regularly for all sorts of things. Some of them have lots of money. Each of them has a price where they drop out, unless what ever is being auctioned has some other value to them. Its called discipline. If the White Sox weren't prepared to give Pods $8 million a month or so ago, what makes you think they would give him $8 million just because the KC Royals really wanted him? Why would the Royals go to that figure just because the White Sox wanted him back? This isn't a highly valued player, and there are more than a couple of reports that basically said Pods wouldn't be back unless he played for close to the minimum. How do you know the White Sox weren't prepared to give him $8 million? How do you have any clue what they were or were not willing to give him? How do you have any clue they would have gotten into a bidding war? They moved on. They didn't want him at a fraction of $8 million. If they were willing to give Pods $8 million, they would have given him $8 million. His agent isn't stupid enough to believe he would have done better than that. And if that's what Pods insisted on playing for why did he sign the contract he signed? Its not like the season starts tomorrow. Dick Allen
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 8, 2010 -> 08:06 PM) Probably because this was the best offer he's gotten recently, and if the Royals signed someone else he'd lose money. The fact is everyone has a limit. To say Pods wouldn't have been available at the price he signed for if there were 2 teams involved, probably is correct. To say his price could easily have gone up to $8 million, most likely is wrong. That said, I shed no tears Pods is no longer a White Sox and actually am happy he will be patrolling CF for another Central Division foe. We aren't talking about a big time player here. Pods had zero suitors last year. He had to call to get a minor league job. To his credit he made the most of it, and I don't blame him for trying to get a boatload of money. The worst thing that can happen is the team could say no, which apparently they all did. Edited January 9, 2010 by Dick Allen

Pierre is a much better bet to play at a higher level in 2010, although I think they overpaid for Pierre. And if it was reasonable then he and his agent are dumb if they played it out and signed what he eventually signed. That's sort of what I meant with a lack of suitors. edit: I suppose I should have been more overt in saying that Pods was definitely not getting that from anybody and that he could have been had at a much more reasonable contract. Whether or not it would be cheap enough to make the Pierre deal look really bad instead of just in between meh and bad, we probably won't ever know. Swingandalongonetoleft
I vacationed in Florida over Christmas-New Years Eve, and my phone, complete with a web browser bookmarked ESPN and MLB.com broke down about 2 weeks ago. I haven't gotten much time to check in with Sox news since then, but a few days ago I had a gut feeling that Pods signed with either the Tigers or Royals. Today I log on and lo and behold. For that money, and after that season, the price was right for Podsednik. The Sox need a DH, and it pains me to know that they're going to dumpster dive to get one. I wish they had made that (DH) spot a priority and *then* weighed their options for the leadoff spot. This offense, until it proves otherwise, is smelly s*** on the bottom of my shoe. When you field a pitching staff as good as the Sox seemingly have, and as risky as it is to bank it all on that staff, (injury, slumps, insert whatever factor you can imagine cause its all legit) and take away a year off their contracts should it not work out, why not fill a friggin DH spot in a bandbox of a ballpark instead of assuming the current trio of lol, wtf, and Jones will produce? I am a fan of the Jones signing. Probably, he won't produce as he has in his prime, but Uribe-esque numbers are certainly not out of his reach. That said, Uribe was a SS/3B/2B. We had a pair of guys whose last names began in TH (and a crazy EV) during Profundo's tenure. Lose a Dye, and who is going to hit HR's? It could be Beckham, Rios, Konerko, Ramirez, and even Teahen or AJ, but I think the liklihood of the afore-mentioned jacking the pearl on a consistent basis is just as likely as not. At this point, bring back one of our past "TH" sluggers, bring back Dye, or, *fills out mega millions card* get Dunn! Don't put a bat in Andruw's hands, kiss him on the forehead, and expect to see anything but the end of September. I hope the "splash" the White Sox make this season isn't banking on The Twins sucking on grass, The Tigers losing Granderson, The Royals being the Royals, or The Indians just sucking in general.
