Rotoworld continues to confuse:

The Astros have offered arbitration to right-hander Jose Valverde, but not shortstop Miguel Tejada or right-handers LaTroy Hawkins or Doug Brocail.

It shouldn't hurt to offer Valverde (a Type A) arbitration, as he should catch on elsewhere. The Astros are believed to have an offer on the table for Hawkins (Type B ) to return, so it's possible they iron out a new deal, however he should have a few more suitors now that he won't cost a draft pick. Tejada (Type A) could find a move to third base in his future.

I'm also almost positive that Hawkins is a Type A.

Just curious... we have some minor league free agents in the system, i.e. Ehren Wassermann, the infamous David Cook, Restovich, etc. For minor league FA's, is there a deadline for when they need to be signed by current team? Any good source of info on where they go?

Also, guys like Wassermann who have played in the majors (like Williams last year), are you considering them on the list?

I don't think there's a deadline, once they're minor league free agents they're free to sign with any team, if you don't think they can re-sign them and don't want to risk losing them then you can add the player to the 40 man roster but other than that they can sign where ever they want at any time once they file.

As for the second part: no, players like Wassermann are of little to no consequence, these are mostly Major League free agents. The list would be ridiculously long if I included minor league free agents with a cup of coffee on their resume.

Add Calero and Johnson to the no list as well. Both had great years and should be worth pursuing.

Calero made 500k this year and still the Marlins refused arb. Ridiculous.

So in the end only 10 Type A free agents were offered arbitration:

Marco Scutaro

Rafael Betancourt

Jose Valverde

Mike Gonzalez

Rafael Soriano

Matt Holliday

Jason Bay

Billy Wagner

Chone Figgins

John Lackey

And 13 Type B free agents:

Ivan Rodriguez

Rod Barajas

Gregg Zaun

Adrian Beltre

Mark DeRosa

Marlon Byrd

Justin Duchscherer

Carl Pavano

Jason Marquis

Joel Pineiro

Brian Shouse

Fernando Rodney

Brandon Lyon

They have until December 7th to decide whether or not to accept the offer of arbitration. If they decline and are signed by another club all Type A free agents will net their original club 2 draft picks, 1 being a 1st round (unless he's signed by a team with a top 16 pick then the former club will receive a 2nd round pick as compensation) and the other being a compensator pick between rounds 1 and 2. A type B free agent will net their former club a comp pick between rounds 1 and 2.

Source: Braves, closer Wagner agree to deal

The Braves did not take long to find a new closer.

The team reached preliminary agreement Tuesday with free-agent left-hander Billy Wagner on a one-year, $7 million contract with a vesting option for a second season, according to a major-league source.

The deal will become official once Wagner passes a physical, which he will take in Atlanta on Wednesday. The vesting option, worth $6.5 million, will become guaranteed if Wagner finishes 50 games next season.

Wagner, 38, would become the most significant player to change teams this offseason. He made a strong and rapid recovery from Tommy John surgery last season, working a pair of scoreless innings after returning to the Mets, then posting a 1.98 ERA in 13 appearances after getting traded to the Red Sox and serving in a setup role.

His return to closing with the Braves would give him a chance to earn the 40 saves he needs to pass John Franco for the all-time record among left-handed pitchers.

The Red Sox offered salary arbitration Tuesday to Wagner, a Type A free agent. If Wagner passes his physical, the Sox will receive the Braves' first-round pick next season — the 20th overall — plus a supplemental pick between the first and second rounds. Their selection from the Braves could drop to a second rounder if Atlanta signs a higher-ranking Type A free agent, but that is unlikely.

The Braves offered salary arbitration Tuesday to their own Type A free- agent relievers, left-hander Mike Gonzalez and righty Rafael Soriano. Either or both could accept one-year, non-guaranteed contracts, but both are drawing strong multi-year interest from other clubs, sources say.

The loss of either Gonzalez or Soriano would enable the Braves to recover the picks they would lose for signing Wagner. The losses of both would leave them with two additional picks.

Zaun a Type B? That may have turned out to be a fantastic trade by Tampa, assuming he doesn't retire (and I don't believe he wants to) and someone signs him.

I predict this is the group of FAs that could still be on the sidelines as we enter February.

3 years? Wow.

$18M total. That's an incredible haul for Polanco.

I'm curious as to what Boras' asking price is for Adrian Beltre if the Phillies would rather shell out $18M for a 34 year old Placido Polanco who had a down year at the plate in 2009 and hasn't played the position since 2005 and a total of 153 INN since 2003.
