southsider2k5
QUOTE (spiderman @ Dec 4, 2009 -> 09:25 AM) No, as a backup Catcher, but I think you knew that. I think his point would be that they aren't mutually exclusive. We need both a back up IF and a back up C.
Kyyle23
So Scutaro is on the BoSox, so now Pedroia is officially a SS? Generally you are moved from that position to second because your range is questionable, no?
BFirebird
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Dec 4, 2009 -> 09:33 AM) So Scutaro is on the BoSox, so now Pedroia is officially a SS? Generally you are moved from that position to second because your range is questionable, no? Or could Scutaro move to 3B? Is Lowell out of the picture? Why would they get an average defensive 2B and replace a GG winner (I think Pedroia has won 1) with him? That would not make much sense to me. Pedroia has really good range for a 2B...but as a SS? Not too sure about that.
Chisoxfn
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Dec 3, 2009 -> 07:32 AM) $18M total. That's an incredible haul for Polanco. I'm curious as to what Boras' asking price is for Adrian Beltre if the Phillies would rather shell out $18M for a 34 year old Placido Polanco who had a down year at the plate in 2009 and hasn't played the position since 2005 and a total of 153 INN since 2003. The Phils wanted Figgins but I guess his asking price was too high. I assume Beltre's was too, but this is a pretty hefty price to pay. He's an offensive upgrade over Feliz, but a major defensive downgrade. I also think 3yrs 18M is pretty ridiculous considering he's a well below league average third baseman. Chisoxfn
QUOTE (chw42 @ Dec 3, 2009 -> 12:33 PM) Saito signs with Atlanta. $3 million for one year. How many old relievers do the Braves need? Seems like a very good deal, definitely one we could have offered. Wow, I had that one pegged pretty good. Very good deal for him.
Chisoxfn
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Dec 3, 2009 -> 03:48 PM) Henry Blanco signed a 1 year, $1.5M deal with the Mets. Damn it, that would have made so much sense for the Sox. Now what do they do at backup catcher. I don't want Flowers on our roster if he isn't getting significant at bats. I spose Olivo is always an option. Wite: I personally don't think 1.5M is all that bad for a plus defensive back-up catcher that has hit lefties pretty well over the past couple years. I also think 3yrs 18M is pretty ridiculous considering he's a well below league average third baseman. I am a little confused by this myself. Even if he is an offensive upgrade over Feliz, given the price Feliz would cost and his defensive abilities at 3B over Polanco, wouldn't Feliz actually be more valuable than Polanco? I don't really get this one at all.
gatnom
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 4, 2009 -> 02:11 AM) Not even close. The Mets are overpaying for a backup player that can only play one position (though he does it well) for essentially the same cost that the Sox got for 2 guys who play 6 positions at an above average clip who are more than likely going to be more effectively offensively than Blanco is. The Sox did just fine backing away from this one. I don't disagree with that. I was just speculating as to how this move affected the Sox. He was the only guy they have been linked to, but I suppose if there's one under-the-radar move you could make it would be for back-up catcher. Personally, I would want Flowers in AAA anyways. Kalapse
Rotoworld is on fire right now. from Dec. 1st: The Mariners offered arbitration to third baseman Adrian Beltre, but declined the opportunity with left-hander Erik Bedard. Both are Type B free agents. Beltre is drawing a decent amount of interest around the league and is likely to reject. As for Bedard, the M's couldn't risk him accepting the offer of arbitration. He made $8 million in 2009 and probably would have been awarded a slight raise through the process. The left-hander is gaining some interest as a high-risk, high-reward arm. from today: According to ESPN.com's Buster Olney, the asking price for Adrian Beltre this offseason has been over $10 million annually. Beltre is a superb defender, but he hit just .265/.304/.379 in 2009 and is unlikely to land the desired sum. He's drawn interest from the Giants and the Phillies, before they signed Placido Polanco. Beltre, a Type B free agent, was not offered arbitration from the Mariners this week. Stay hot, Rotoworld.

Generally you are moved from that position to second because your range is questionable, no? Scutaro played over 1200 innings of average shortstop for the Blue Jays last season and has been primarily a shortstop since 2005, he has over 3400 career innings at the position compared to only 2200 at 2B. I do believe Scutaro will be their everyday SS.

Wite: I personally don't think 1.5M is all that bad for a plus defensive back-up catcher that has hit lefties pretty well over the past couple years. I still think Flowers is a great option - backup C and learn the bigs, do some DH work to get more at bats (whomever we put at DH is probably going to be older and need some days off), he's cheap, and he can get to know the pitchers. I'm not concerned about the catcher at DH problem, which would come up only, at worst, once in a year. Unfortunately, I think Ozzie might be more concerned about that, so it may not be his thing. Kalapse
Eh, 4/$40M was about what I expected. Precedent set that as the price for a player of his stature. $35M is a good deal for the mariners, they really will not hesitate to throw big money around. What should he expect? I'm not even sure, they're just totally different kinds of players, I'm sure Boras will us this as an opportunity to push for $40M since you can make the case that Beltre is the more valuable player going forward. But what does the Market for a player like Beltre look like right now? I don't think there's incredible demand so I'd say there's a 30% chance he signs a ~$8M, 1 year deal and attempts to increase his potential earnings on the 2011 free agent market and if the does get a multi-year deal it'd probably be somewhere right around what Figgins got, maybe a little less. witesoxfan
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Dec 4, 2009 -> 10:45 AM) Wite: I personally don't think 1.5M is all that bad for a plus defensive back-up catcher that has hit lefties pretty well over the past couple years. I don't think it's a bad deal for the Mets, necessarily, but I don't think the Sox should invest that much into a backup catcher. Take a chance on a guy who is good defensively and shows that he can hit left handed pitching. The Sox backup catcher over the past 5+ years has never done anything other than really get lost in obscurity. Widger, Hall, Alomar, Miller, Castro...they don't add a whole hell of a lot and never really have.
