Cain also has thrown two straight shutouts, so his ERA is going to plummet. Silva's been sensational this year, no other way to describe it.

he's been a very good pitcher only way I would use a 127 ERA+ pitcher as "sensational" is considering the expectations of him coming into the season... I reserve "sensational" for upper echelon pitchers, which he is not.

Again, I'm not ripping on the guy, it's worked out tremendously for the Cubs, but if he starts to regress a little it shouldn't shock anyone.

Some Little League-esque defense by the Cardinals this inning. Schumaker whiffed on the easy out at 2nd, and then the awful throw home. The Cardinals are a very confusing team this year. Not a lot of energy on the field, where as the Reds have a ton of energy.

in the division they have superior talent, so it might take an extend push from the Reds or Cubs during the summer to show some energy, they might have read their clippings.

Ottavino better hope he can be a reliever, because with his lack of control and no secondary pitches, he'll never be a MLB starter.

good point, what he showed early with some good speed, some life and decent control, he might be able to be an effective reliever, but seeing him more than once or twice a game will be bad

Get Aramis back in the line up so Fontenot can get back to the bench.

Fontenot and Colvin should play every time they face a RHP. I had no idea Fontenot was as good as he was 2 years ago.

who's pitching for the Cards tomorrow? Hopefully Wainwright or Garcia

Wainwright, but they don't match up well with Dempster as the Cardinals have looked horrible on every offspeed pitch they've seen this week. They made Jon Garland look like he has a good slider.

wow, just looked at the numbers, and he was good 3 years ago in 119 games.

Come on Cardinals, you know you want to give up the farm for Mark Buehrle. With Lohse out for the year and Brad Penny always a threat to not recover, you're going to need two more starters.

Problem is their farm might be as bad as ours.

I know, it's too bad. I still think Jenks is a perfect fit with the Reds. Cardinals are going to have to trade for some starting pitching.

IMO a lot is going to depend on what the Cubs and Reds do until July, if the Cards are in first with the Reds close by and the Cubs 5-8 games behind, they may stand pat. If the Reds or Cubs make a serious charge then their hand might be forced.

FWIW, many baseball writers are saying it's unlikely the Astros would trade Oswalt in the division unless they got a ridiculous package for him.

With June right around the corner, I'd say the Reds being in front of the Cardinals in the standings with Volquez/Chapman lurking is a pretty serious threat.

MLBN had on their scrawl yesterday that Rosenthal is reporting Dempster is deferring 3m this year so the Cubs can try to add a little payroll

Outside of a set-up man, what position do they really need to upgrade?

right now it is, but Volquez is not a sure thing when he returns and Chapman is wild in AAA so not 100% sure what he will be like in the majors this year.

well basically any team could use an upgrade on the bench, but they could easily upgrade for Theriot, outside his good start Soto has struggled a lot lately http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/...ar=2010&t=b so they could use a stronger back-up catcher or a guy who can platoon more, who knows what is going on with A-Ram, They've gotten a TON out of Gorzelanny and Silva (Coming into today Gorzelanny's numbers, outside of record, aren't too far off from Silva's, 127 to 122 ERA+), cannot guarantee what the heck they're going to get out of Zambrano when he comes back and Randy Wells has been below average this year so they could easily upgrade in SP'ing, and as you pointed out, they could easily use another BP arm, they signed Howry for goodness sake! This isn't some super team who is struggling IMO.
