Brent Morel ranks 11th in the International League prospect list right behind Dan Hudson. Ranked higher than some very highly touted players (Jake Arrieta, Yonder Alonso, Jose Tabata, Wilson Ramos, etc.) He has really proven to be a great pick despite looking like an overdraft at the time. Odd though that Morel is ranked and Viciedo isn't. In terms of being a "prospect" where a lot of the definition is on potential, Dayan crushes Morel. I am sure most here would agree with that. Thoughts on Morel ranked and Dayan not? Perhaps he wasn't eligible?

Barret Loux, who was the 6th overall pick by the Dbacks this year who ended up not signing and was actually made a FA (he failed his physical with a torn labrum and elbow problems) has thrown in front of scouts recently and is taking offers.

I haven't read anything talking about how he threw or his recovery time, but the Sox were not one of the teams in attendance. Still, I always like the idea of getting in quality arms and Loux had some nice upside (even though he should have never been taken 6th overall). Loux was a stud at Texas A&M.

Edit: It sounds like scouts generally came away impressed with his throwing session.

It is pretty accepted knowledge that the Sox liked his tools, but his injury history made him a no-go. There was a segment that is attributed to being Loux during The Show.

Which makes it that much more surprising the Sox didn't take in his workout.

I don't think I have ever seen a kid get made a free agent and sign for cheaper than they could have been paid by their original team. In other words if we weren't willing to draft him and pay him as a mid first rounder, I doubt we bid against the rest of the league for him.

There's 2 issues here though...on one hand, the Sox might not have been willing to pay for him as a first rounder...on the other hand, the issue might have been that the Sox didn't want to spend their first round draft pick on the guy. They might have been willing to commit the money, but not willing to commit the pick.

Which one sounds more like the Sox? I know I am going with the money. They don't spend on injury prone pitchers. Period.

I know there are complications because not all the injuries were pitching injuries, but the counterpoint to that is Jake Peavy.

The types of injuries are the centerpoint. We are talking about major shoulder and elbow problems versus ankle problems from running the bases and a freak muscle injury which happened after he got here, so it had no affect on the thought process of trading for Peavy.

Even still, I think in the back of a lot of people's minds, Peavy was something of an injury risk in terms of his arm motion. Just like Sale. Awkward motion that some people thought would cause problems down the road. Awkward enough that Cooper was trying to get him to tinker with it to start this season, if you remember.

It sounds like that will be the case this go-round. He'll probably sign for anywhere between 500K and 1.5M, which is less than the contract he had initially agreed to from the Dbacks, IIRC. The reason is his arm problems.

If they liked him, you still think they'd atleast attend the sessions. Having a scout there to watch him throw costs pennies to a multi-multi-million dollar company.

Why waste the money if you know someone else is going to bid more than you would ever spend?

Joe McEwing will manage Birmingham. Ever Magallanes to be a roving infield coach.

From the same article... interesting, someone in PHT recently suggested we needed some ex Twins on the club... now ex Twins catcher Laudner is going to be a coach in the Sox org.

McEwing has a lot of potential as a manager. It could be that the Sox are going to put him on a Sandberg-esque track up to the point of being a legitamate player for major league jobs.

And then not promote him.

Keep an eye out here, we'll have the new Top 25 list out soon.

Also, danman, myself and others will start putting some offseason material out on the ChicagoNow site (and link here), to keep things moving.

That reminds me I forgot to link this here: October news and notes

Complete list of White Sox players in the Caribbean leagues as well as a few other tidbits.
