NBC Set to LOSE "a couple hundred million bucks" on Olympics

NBC Will LOSE Money On Winter Olympics

PASADENA, Calif. — NBC Universal says it expects to lose money televising the Winter Olympics from Vancouver next month.

NBC Sports chief Dick Ebersol said that while advertising sales were soft for much of last year, they have picked up as the Olympics drew near. The loss comes primarily due to the stiff rights fee NBC paid to broadcast the games, he said.

NBC paid $820 million for the rights to televise the Winter Games. That compares to the $613 million paid for the rights to televise the Olympics in Turin, Italy, in 2006.

Ebersol said it will be the first time NBC has lost money on the games since he began producing the telecasts from Barcelona in 1992.

The head of NBC's parent company, General Electric's Jeffrey Immelt, told investors recently that he expected NBC would lose "a couple hundred million bucks" on the games.

NBC won't cut back on its coverage plans due to the financial problems, the network said.

It remains unclear whether this financial reality will affect negotiations for the U.S. rights to televise the Olympics in 2014 and 2016. The International Olympics Committee is expected to award coverage rights sometime this year.

First the prime time lineup tanks, then they screw up the whole Leno / Conan thing, now this.

How so? The Beijing Olympics were incredibly highly rated, especially when there was live coverage.

That's the Summer Olympics though.

The Winter Olympics have just never been big IMO.

Maybe in the European nations however.

Well that wasn't the point he was making. And no the Winter Olympics aren't as big as the Summer Olympics. There are obviously far less events and I don't think Americans are as familiar with the individual events either.

I remember about 10 years or so ago when the Olympics used to be about everyone getting together in the spirit of competition and watching the United States win everything :(

You should have watched the 1984 Olympics in LA without the Soviets or Eastern Bloc countries. Good times for the USA.

Yeah but that has always only been the Summer Olympics. The Winter Olympics the US is solid bot not dominant.

To be fair, the Winter Olympics don't really matter... ;)

The Summer is definitely the bigger and better event, but I love the Winter Olympics as well. Skiing, the sled, and speed skating are all fun to watch and I love Olympic Hockey. I also developed an interest in curling when I was up at 3 am and nothing else was on during the last Olympics.

I used to mock curling until I actually watched it a few years back. i LOVE it now.

Totally. When I was in college in 02, I started watching it and was hooked. Ended up missing classes cause I didnt wanna leave when it was going on. Other than the hockey, its definitely the best part of the Winter Olympics.
