Technology catch-all thread

Apple products: Good.

Apple product launches: Awful.

How many times is Apple going to do this kind of thing to their most loyal customers? Not shipping pre-orders, drastically cutting prices right after a product launch....instead of buying the Ipad in the next couple of weeks I'm going to save myself the hassle and wait for the 2nd generation.

I mean, considering their history of price cuts in 2nd gen and the possibility of some seriously boner upgrades, I have never bought at the launch. Especially with this one though, since i have $7.

Exactly. If you MUST buy Apple, then certainly don't ever buy the first gen. They like to purposely water down the 1st version of what they make just so they can release a 2nd gen and say "Look at all the things we have added!", even though those things could have been implemented from day 1.

I will laugh in 6 months when we see commercials for the Ipad 2nd gen "Now with Flash player and Bluetooth!", then another 6 mo. and "Now with USB and Multi-tasking", then eventually it will be comparable to a laptop/netbook.

Well first of all, their open or soft format allows most of the new capabilities to be enabled via software updates.

Secondly, this is how capitalism and twenty-first century materialism works. This is certainly not something Apple is somehow only guilty of.

Finally, I cannot see AT&T subsidizing this device, so I don't think you are going to see the massive price drops. Especially considering Jobs and others made it a huge talking point that they made the pricepoint as low as they could at launch.

Like the IPhone?

You think that isn't the exact reason I wrote that last paragraph?

Do you really think AT&T is going to subsidize a device whereby a large percentage of them do not utilize any type of contract with AT&T to operate?

Additionally, at the iPhone launch, Jobs did not go on and on and on and their marketing did not revolve around the pricepoint.

I would be shocked if a flash deal goes through.

But, i mean, the multi tasking and stuff should be implemented soon.

Yeah, Jobs has openly bashed flash and it does wreck havoc on Macs. I'll probably buy a tablet when the 2nd generation of this current wave of devices comes out. I don't need to gamble on picking the winner when I can just wait for popular opinion to show the way.

Only to find out that all the presents you open are just re-gifted items that you already own ;)

Hah, not so!

I work nights, my friend. You have no idea how perfect this device is for me...

I disagree there won't be a price drop. While it may not be subsidized, it would shock me if in the next gen the 16 gb isn't phased out and the rest drop down. The 16 gB one is useless.

There has to be a price drop. This thing is already very overprice. It will drop down at least $50, if not $100 for the next gen.

Well, I said I didn't think you will see a "massive" price drop.

The nature of new technology, and electronics particularly, is that the price of things do indeed come down over time. I would not be surprised either. I am not going to lose sleep over a $50-100 price drop from 1st gen to 2nd gen.

I also wouldn't doubt if you are correct and the 16 gig does get dropped and a larger HD size becomes available.

One of the points I was trying to make is I don't believe this is a situation like the iPhone where there is a price drop within months of literally 50% of the purchase price. Obviously, I have no crystal ball and I could be mistaken, but judging from the comments from the high-level designers at Apple as well as their marketing campaign ("A magical device at an unbelievable price"), it would seem to be a mistake for them to suddenly find a few hundred dollars to shave off the price tag.

The other point is the open or soft format Apple uses. I am no IT wizard, so I cannot explain things as well as some others here, but by way of Apple's software updates, one can keep older generation iPhones up to speed pretty well when compared against their newer gen counterparts. My guess is the same will be true with the iPad.

In terms of processing speed, this is not true at all. My fiance has the 2nd generation iphone (3G), and I have the 3rd (3Gs). The speed over everything from loading pages, loading programs, even screen swipes take twice as long, if not more. Hardware limitations are hardward limitations. There will be the same issue with the iPad, I almost guarantee it.

I was talking about features, such as cut and paste, picture messaging, etc. Of course even Apple can't magically update your hardware through iTunes updates. This applies to anything...if you insist on having the fastest everything, you're constantly going to be shelling out $. That really doesn't bother me...as long as the product still works at a reasonable level, that's fine by me.

I didn't want to make a new thread, but did you guys hear about Verizon now getting a new version of the iPhone in the summer with massive production in the fall? Supposedly it's a smaller screen(rumor). Finally, the iPhone is on a good carrier. Hooray for VZW.

Balta posted a link to it in the Money thread. Supposedly it is a thinner phone with a faster processor. This announcement was supposed to come the day the iPad was announced, but they probably didn't want to steal any of their own thunder away.

It can only help Apple, that's for certain.

So long DROID.

I wouldn't say that. It's gotten a pretty good reception and you'd think it would be upgraded over time as well.

This review makes me realize how lame the ipad launch was. it was the same as the iphone. They didn't tap into any of the new assets. Read this review, it illuminates you on all the possibilities that even apple can't imagine that the myriad minds tap into when they start creating for this device. I didn't think I would be a consumer for the iPad, but after reading this, I'm definitely in once I get money (soon, please god!)

I think there is some calculation behind the recent trend to underhype apple products at launch. Once the products drop, the evolution of the apps that follow and the unforeseen uses are driven by users and third-party developers, and that's where a lot of the bang comes from. Apple provides gorgeous hardware and a stable OS, and plays Nazi-Schoolmarm over retailing apps and warning users of impending eternal damnation if they jailbreak their devices. But like you said, until the user community taps into the device, that's when the fun really begins.
