Technology catch-all thread

This is from December, but I'm not sure how I missed it:

How the Voice of Tech Leaked His Own Sex Chat

Every month, Leo Laporte delivers technology advice to millions of people who download his podcasts and tune in to his syndicated radio show. He is, as one of his programs bills him, "The Tech Guy" whose digital savvy was recognized, near the dawn of the web, with an Emmy Award. But for all his expertise, Laporte still managed to clumsily broadcast an explicit Google chat with his lover, exposing the affair he's apparently been carrying on with his CEO.

-----

[update: Laporte said he is indeed separated from his wife. It's been abut a year, "it's just not something I talk about on air," he said in a Saturday morning tweet. Laporte later blogged that he "apologized abjectly and abundantly" to Kentzell for deciding to leave the chat in the video podcast he distributed after the live recording. He added that the relationship "may have come as a bit of a shock to our staff" but that his family was aware of it.]

Has anyone else seen the preview for the next Mac OS, Mountain Lion. I'm not sure how I feel about the continued immersion of IOS and Mac OS.

I think that bringing the phone and system OS's together seems to be the trend for both Apple and Microsoft. Not sure about the Googles.

AnyOne ever use a site like Quibids.com?

I think that the auction times keep resetting back to 30 seconds left every time there is a bid in the last 30 seconds. Basically, an auction can go on forever.

The times reset every time a person puts in another bid, so that the bidders can't predict when it's going to end. Every bid then costs $1 or so. If there are 2000 bids before an ipad goes, the person who made the final bid might only have spent $5 or $10 to get it, but the company gets a $1500 profit on an ipad.

There's really no trick to it, the winning bidder is just the person who happens to bid and then have the clock run the full way down without someone else bidding and restarting it. It's probably pretty darn close to random.

Don't you wish you'd thought of it? Sounds like the owners of these sites are raking in the cash.

Also sounds too good to be true, and a business model that is destined to crash and burn.

It basically relies on people gambling, and it's legal to do over the internets (so far). There's a limit to how big they can get since the rewards aren't "Cash", but the gambling market in this country seems healthy to me.

I officially despise Apple now.

I wanted to download some music I had purchased on my other laptop, so my computer said I had "165 awaiting download," I figured them to be the stuff I have already purchased on iTunes, so I hit "Download now". It then proceeded to start downloading The Complete Led Zeppelin, that I had pre-ordered, but never payed for, 4 years ago as I decided against wanting the item. It charged $100 f***ing dollars automatically. No requesting confirmation or anything.

I'm really, really mad.

Contact customer service, I bet they would do something about that.

I sent in a "Report a Problem" but suffice to say this pisses me off. I paused the downloads, but I doubt that does anything. Just have to wait back from Customer Service and if I don't by tomorrow, I'll call in.

They'll just remove the charges.

Got a gift card for the Apple store from the girlfriend and where it says value it reads "one iPhone 4S."

I guess the question is, do I pull the trigger on the 4S or wait a bit for either the iPad 3 or the iPhone 5?

iPhone 5 wont be until September. So, it's down to 4S or iPad3.

PS: Sweet gift!

Just found out I know someone who is deeply involved with Blackberry software development and the new Tablet and phone OS. Kinda cool.

You should tell them to get to the nearest lifeboat...the Titanic is sinking. I know, he will probably tell you, "But this ship can't sink!"...but I assure you, it can. And it will. ;D

iPad 3. It will do everything an iPhone 5 can do except make calls, so as long as you already have a cell phone, no need for an iPhone 5 is you have an iPad3.

How do you folks know that?

Apple tends to keep their products on a usual refresh cycle. iPad is in spring. Macs over the summer. iPhone and opossums in the fall.

See, this is why I asked the question in the first place...because the only iPhone released in the fall was the 4s. The original, 3G, and 4 were all released in June.
