BigSqwert
QUOTE (Y2HH @ Apr 13, 2010 -> 11:02 AM) This is a feature missing from the iPad I think it should have had from the onset. But it's the only feature that this thing sports that the ipad truly needs without sacrificing usability/battery. The only feature? The open source thing is what drew me in. bmags
yeah, the thing is...there were so many mp3 players that everyone would say "it's so much BETTER than the ipod and CHEAPER" and it didn't matter. Apple's ipod was a cultural icon...and google we can't live without anymore. This random company...maybe they will succeed but right off the bat with their first launch? It'll take a long time to get a market share. I'd say they might get 10%...might. BUt probably more like 2-3% with their first launch. Y2HH
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Apr 13, 2010 -> 11:03 AM) The only feature? The open source thing is what drew me in. Open source means nothing. Linux has been open source for decades. So what. It's not made a dent and never will. Most open source only gets so good before it closes itself off so the person sinking their time into it can make a living. For the most part, in almost every respect, the open source movement has failed...and it continues to fail, because it collapses in upon itself. Every single open source movement starts the same, and then it splinters off into 500 directions, all taking up a combined 1% market share, but all competing with each other/undermining each other for a piece of that 1%. Until the next big thing comes along -- RedHat comes to mind...that'll make real strides! Oh, wait, never mind, Ubuntu all the way! This is just another case of open source that will fail. As much as you want it to succeed, it won't. But don't believe me...buy one, and in a year, throw it out and buy an iPad v2 or a competing Microsoft device. I don't plan on buying it or any other tablet for that matter. But if I were forced to buy one, something like this seems more appealing. BigSqwert
QUOTE (Y2HH @ Apr 13, 2010 -> 10:56 AM) Exactly. This device won't fail because it sucks, it'll fail because nobody will care about buying from an unknown, with unknown support, unknown methods to fix it if it breaks (and it will), and a whole lot of other reasons. But you'll at least be able to use a non-Apple router to get a wi-fi signal.

HuskyCaucasian
QUOTE (Y2HH @ Apr 13, 2010 -> 10:42 AM) They always do -- until you get them and there are 4 apps total, and nothing new coming out because nobody cares about developing for it. This will come down to Apple vs Google, nobody else is stepping in with the necessary support/user base/developer base to make a table worth a damn, including this one. The WePad is Google in a way. It runs Android. I am looking to see the Google Tablet. That has real potential.

I'm sure that'll be fixed soon. There are some WiFi settings that are messing them up, but for the most part they work if you don't configure your WiFi all goofy, or not at all so you're SSID is the same as your neighbors, and their neighbors (I've seen this). ChiliIrishHammock24
QUOTE (Y2HH @ Apr 13, 2010 -> 07:39 AM) Then get an Android, or a Pre. There are many other choices that do the same things in all-in-one devices that are very affordable. Carrying around an MP3 player that does nothing but play MP3's, while having to carry around a separate phone, and a separate computer is just...so 1995. Maybe you should get yourself a walkman like Bartman and sport that ... cuz then you wouldn't have to pay for an overpriced MP3 player. Does the Droid come out for AT&T??? And my Zune HD does a lot more than just play MP3, it does everything BUT make phone calls. And $179 for it is not even close to overpriced. flippedoutpunk
***Off-Topic*** I hate people that say Apple users are a bunch of sheep trying to get in with the trend. I totally resent that.. When i think of that statement, I TOTALLY think something like Chicago Cubs.. You have a nice shiny product being sold in a nice shiny area, everyone talks about it, its trendy, but in the end its a totally INFERIOR product. That is not apple by any means because the product is in no way, shape or form inferior. When i switched from PC to Apple 2 years ago (after nearly 17 years of Windows use) i was literally blown away by how much easier it was to use and the peace of mind of knowing how hard it is to get a virus on the friggin thing and my macbook is still ticking two years later after heavy usage and tons of pr0n sites and accidental clicks onto shady looking web links. I used to be an android user, with the G1 and then the HTC myTouch. And i truly loved it. But then i saw these people with their fancy iphone 3GS and i thought wats the big deal, but then i saw them access apps at lightning speeds and text people with an ultra-responsive keyboard. My touchscreen keyboard on myTouch always seemed to have some lag when typing on it, and the processor suddenly seemed weak compared to the iPhone.. So i decided why not own the iPhone since its clearly the quality product. And then once i found out about jailbreaking the iphone and doing things that make it 100 times better than what is actually is, well, that was just the icing on the Apple cake
iamshack
Well, I'm at the airport posting on my iPad and the airport WiFi signal is working just dandy! I don't care what you guys say; this is the perfect device for the airport...I have several movies downloaded, some books downloaded, and plenty of battery life to boot! The thing to remember is, the G1 was the first of its kind, so it's also the one with the weakest hardware. The significant thing about the G1 wasn't so much the phone itself, but showing what Android could do and that it could be the next big thing. I have a Motorola Cliq now (another Android phone) and it's much faster than the G1, and has more built-in features, etc. I've never actually used an iPhone but after using the Cliq, and knowing there are other, more powerful phones than it, I feel confident in saying its speed is comparable to the iPhone. I prefer qwerty keyboards though FWIW. Call me old-fashioned.

Yeah, honestly, despite the lack of multi-tasking, i am toggling back and forth between functions and webpages extremely easily. The processor is fast enough that it's just sort of manual multi-tasking by learning how to manipulate the touchscreen quickly. I kinda feel like Tom Cruise in Minority Report. RockRaines
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Apr 14, 2010 -> 08:43 AM) I'm not going to lie, sounds like it would be pretty useful for my 11 and 14 hour flights to and from Shanghai coming up. The thing is that people critical of the ipad (like myself initially) are trying to fit it into the world of laptop computing. It is just not what it was intended for. It is a casual media device that is very useful for certain things like working with media, or surfing the internet. Thats about it. With the cellular support, you basically have something that is a mobile magazine or book with the capability to watch movies or shows. If you want to do alot more than that, of course you are going to be disappointed. Now if you just want to do some basic functions, work with media, read ebooks and basically entertain yourself with an extremely mobile device, then you will love the ipad. There really isnt much better than it for just sitting around on the couch surfing the web or watching bootlegged internet TV. A couple of co-workers of mine actually replaced their notebooks with ipads for taking notes in meetings and showing demos to clients. Pretty slick.
