I had one of those, brand new, last 15 months.

It's been great so far for me (7 months). I got it on the recommendation of my old roommate who's in a Computer Science Ph. D program, so I assume he at least knows something about what he's talking about? He said everyone he knew had either a Macbook Pro or a Lenovo Thinkpad (and he himself has a Thinkpad).

In any case, it's like anything else -- know what you what in a computer, look around, take what you read here/elsewhere, and then make the best decision for you.

For me, no matter if I have Macafee or Symnatec, my Dell is always getting trojans and things are breaking down for me.

I want to get a new one and whipe my Dell clean to like a whole system restore and use it for some writing stuff for work. Want to get a different/new one to use casually.

The Dell in my room is at least 9 years old, the Dell I am typing on is 4 years old.

The radio station I am interning at is switching over to using all Macs and hooking everything up w/ Firewire. Oh my god, kill me.

People still use Firewire?

Quit clicking on porn popups Brian. :P

Seriously, I've gotten only one really bad virus in the past 3-4 years. Usually, you rarely get viruses on Windows computers. Just be smart with what you download or click.

I don't understand it, but he's in love with it. I just spent over $110 of his money on 3 different types of 6 ft Firewire cables we needed just to hook up a newly purchased $210 mechanical switcher to go from CAM 1 to CAM 2. All that money because the Mac we are using only has 1 Firewire port on it. Apparently getting a splitter wasn't an option.

Why would you use either of those programs? They're basically viruses themselves. Microsoft Security Essentials is free and better than either of them.

Firewire >>>>> USB2.

But not USB 3.0.

I just don't see the point of going with a technology nearly nobody uses when there is a standard tech out there that is actually faster.

I can't tell if this is a serious statement or what, from a usually knowledgeable poster.

You know damn well that USB3 didn't exist when Firewire was ousted against a vastly inferior USB2. Yes, USB3 is faster than a decade old technology. And Thunderbolt, just like Firewire before it, blows USB3 away with relative ease.
