It didn't sound right, but I assumed IK probably had a friend that was sick of dicking with his computer. People can be like that sometimes. I've been given stuff like that just because the original owner didn't want to continue stressing about it.

Hah...so the computer isn't worth $75-80 bucks because it doesn't have an OS? That's something you do to a schlep on Craigslist, not your friend.

Just bought a nearly 4-year-old Sony Vaio off a friend of mine....for $20. I was originally going to pay $75 for it. Then he decided before he was going to give it to me that he would wipe the harddrive......which deletes the operating system....which he lost the disc/key for (He upgraded it from Vista to Windows 7). So he said he'd go buy a student version of Win7 when he went down to IU for $20, so I agreed to throw in $5 to be nice.

Now the price is at $80.

Well he tries the new disc, and finds out it won't work, because it's an UPGRADE disc, one that requires an OS be on the system to upgrade, well there is no OS on it since he wiped it and lost the install disc/key. So frustrated that he thinks he just bricked the system, he says I can take it off his hands for $20, and then buy my own OS for it, then use his upgrade disc to make it Windows 7.

What he didn't realize is that the product key for his Vista OS, which is what came on the computer, is on a sticker on the bottom of his computer. So I simply found MY windows Vista disc from my other laptop, put it in the computer, changed the BIOS settings to have it boot from my disc, installed Windows Vista using his old product key. Then, because it at that point had an OS on it, put in the Win7 disc, installed Win7, upgrading the OS from 32-bit to 64-bit, and BOOM, got a pretty nice Sony Vaio laptop for $20.

Sometimes it really pays to know more than your friends about technology and computers. It's a shame too because I gave him every chance to fix the problem himself, and then sell it to me for $80, but he was too lazy and just wanted the computer gone.

I'd have to imagine you have very few "friends". I'd never screw over someone I consider my friend who's already giving me a deal.

Nah, you don't know the whole story at all actually. So you're actually way off base with your attacks.

I'm not really "attacking" you, I'm merely writing my reaction to what you wrote. That was my reaction. If I don't know the whole story, as you now state, it's because you didn't tell us to me/us.

Hyperbole (/haɪˈpɜrbəliː/ hy-pur-bə-lee;[1] Greek: ὑπερβολή hyperbolē, "exaggeration") is the use of exaggeration as a rhetorical device or figure of speech. It may be used to evoke strong feelings or to create a strong impression, but is not meant to be taken literally.[2]

Do I need to remind you that hyperbole is not allowed on this site? You face potential suspension, possibly indefinitely.

Enough with the hyperbole

That's what I'm saying. I told him how to fix it, told him there should be a sticker on the bottom of the system, and told him to get it fixed, then I'd buy it. He decided instead he was just sick of having it and told me to take it for $20.

He originally wanted $50, I told him to see if he could better offers elsewhere, and I'd match whatever offer he got. He eventually got an offer for $75, I matched it, no one would offer more, so after about 2 weeks, he agreed to sell it. THEN, when it messed up, HE said "just give me $20 and take it off my hands". I never once demanded a price from him, and I told him how to fix it. Not my fault he is lazy and didn't want to do it himself.

And then brag about it on the Internet, as if being a s***ty person is impressive.

I was not "bragging", I just found it crazy how lazy some people are when it comes to learning technology, and how knowing something about computers can be so valuable. Get off your damn high horse and stop with the attacks. Ah nevermind, I'll just report you.

Ahh, because earlier, you said something like "what he didn't notice" was that the Vista key was on a sticker on the bottom of the computer...

But whatever, people here just enjoy giving you a hard time.

I should have said "What WE didn't notice". I thought the OS disc was tied to a key, but after I texted our TECH guy at work to find out what can be done, he informed me of the sticker, in which I showed my friend (he was in the room w/ me while I was texting and trying to figure it out), but he lost his Vista disc anyway, so we thought it didn't matter. It wasn't until after I bought the computer from him that I realized I probably had a Vista disc from one of our other computers, and that I found out all those discs are the same, it's the STICKER that matters.

I COULD tell even more of the story, in which HE actually looks like a real jerk here, but I don't have any reason to make him look bad, the whole point of the story was not about "who is right here", it was just the surprisingly laziness of some people when it comes to technology, even if it costs them money in the end.

Ohh...so it wasn't so much that YOU knew more about computers and technology than your friends, but your tech guy did....got it.

I suppose more like I have more patience for computers to figure out the problems. It is nice having a tech guy I can text though to get tips on things like that.

This is mostly why I'm paid what I'm paid. Because people suck at technology. Especially the ones that think they're good at it.

Nova Launcher. Yeeus.

I tell all my friends with Android phones to use Nova. It's well worth the 5 bucks to get the pro version too. You can get a transparent app drawer, hide icons you don't want, edit any app's name and icon, get extra transitions, etc.

Apex launcher is also pretty good.
