It's quite easy to ignore the posts you don't understand or care about. I don't see anything wrong with delving deeper into the subject.

If you want, there's always the option of splitting this into two threads.

Oh I do ignore a lot of the posts...and I also take a few playful jabs at some of you guys for being such phone geeks...you respond by saying I am being condescending or that I am jealous that my iPhone can't turn on someone else's projector or something...

It's no big deal...just explaining why it is that I was jabbing at some of you in the first place.

You do know that I was just busting your balls right?

I hope you all realize the entire last 4 pages or so happened because a few people decided to s*** on me for no reason for saying I thought the IR blaster in my phone was cool. Never said my phone invented the technology, never said it is the only phone to do it, and never said a damn thing about iPhones not being able to do it (which I had no idea if they could or couldn't, because I couldn't care less either way). Just said I thought it was cool.

Basically what I've learned here is I need to be super jaded about technology and not be impressed by anything, because god forbid someone else has used this technology before me, I will be criticized for being out of date and easily impressed and thought of as a kid.

Duly noted.

Some of the things you've said before (in this thread particularly) make it easy for them to pick on you.

That being said, picking on you because you liked the IR blaster on your phone was uncalled for.

After all that went down, having Chilihead90 chime back in all butthurt...this is exactly how I feel.

But seriously, consider it a rite of passage around here...we all go through getting messed with. ;)

What??

You are the one that is super jaded and Debbie Downer because you are on some ridiculous crusade against Apple. Now, after like 3 years of feigning boredom with anything Apple, you start celebrating these silly things like the ability to control a projector in your college auditorium. And you expect no one to throw a few barbs at you for that? That is something we did in like 4th grade to the substitute teacher. When you're in college you should be using your phone to hack into the database and change your grades or use it to film girls in the sorority house showering or something.

Pandora+Bluetooth stereo's would have been revolutionary when I was in college. The lengths we went to put up music on my creative jukebox and then connect it correctly to a nice soundsystem was time consuming.

LMAO, we drilled a hole in our ceiling to my roomates room and hooked his computer up to our stereo for parties. Cost us a quarter of our rental deposit because we werent very good at patching holes.

TOTALLY WORTH IT THOUGH!

I had a couple of friends who found a way to spoof their modem's MAC address, find a list of Comcast customers' authorized MAC addresses, and pick a MAC address that was far enough away that they were on a different segment of Comcast's network and the conflict wasn't detected. Got free cable internet for a few years doing that.

I was all about hacking DirecTV access cards so we could get all the channels, including the porn channels and NFL Sunday ticket.

That was quite the cat and mouse game back then.

a friend of mine did that for me, but they zapped the cards and he wasnt able to fix it again.

Yeah, they would only work for a few hours to a few weeks at which point you'd have to go online and find the new code to zap into your card reader to reprogram your access card.

It was a pain in the butt to keep up with, but probably better than paying for it :)

Speaking of HTC, a man was shot in the chest while his HTC Evo in his breastfeeding pocket. It stopped the bullet; the man didn't realize for a second that he'd been hit. HTC heard about it and sent him a One and some other goodies. No link as I am on mobile.

EDIT: and by breastfeeding pocket, I mean breast. Autocorrected...

Friend got busted for this when one if the card writer sellers was raided, they got his information, and DTV threatened to sue unless he settled out of court for 3k. Hiring a lawyer to fight the case all told would have been more, so he relented and paid it.

Kind of like using the court system to hold people ransom.

WE ran speaker wire all over the outside of the house and the roof while using a staple gun. Mostly so we could move the speakers anywhere in the house including outside and on the roof.

Yep, I got the same letter. I told them to get bent. Never heard from them about it again.

Yea he tried to do the same, but actually did hear from them. Multiple times. There was a time they were serious about taking these to court, but that faded away a few years after, when they started losing these suits. But at that time, court was going to happen.

From what I recall, in 2004 or so, an Illinois appellate court ruled that possessing certain equipment, such as card readers, was not a per se violation of whatever law they claimed you were in violation of. That shut down most of the litigation, however, they continued to make threats.

I remember they gave me the option of paying $3k to settle, or they would seek 10 times that in court.

No, he wasn't.

There was a time these cases were real, and actually went to court. And there was no upside to going to court. If you went, and won, you'd end up owing about 3250 in lawyer/court costs (more than what they asked to settle), and in the off chance you lost, you'd be losing even more. It wasn't until a few years later the courts started striking these suits down and they became easily defendable.

IIRC, this was when they were living on 36th Lowe -- which would make it around 1998.
