Kenny Williams said that he made a multi-year offer to Bobby Jenks before they settled on the contract for one year that he got at $7.5 million. They also chased after Nick Johnson, but couldn't match the Yankees $5.5 million offer. They also couldn't afford Chad Tracy, all according to the CHicago Tribune.

This is BS. Chad Tracy would have cost a couple million at best.

The fact we couldn't match 5.5 million in an offer for Nick Johnson pisses me off even more than we're wasting money on Mark Kotsay.

And Omar Vizquel...

Teahen + Vizquel + Kotsay pretty much pays for Johnson.

I'd rather have Johnson than those three.

I think Kenny has something up his sleeve, he usually doesn't BS like this.

Good point, I'd much rather have Getz over Teahen if it meant having money to afford an actual DH.

I get the feeling that even if we did match it, he would have gone to NY anyway. Why would someone chose the Sox over the Yankees right now?

Kotsay should have never been signed. He should not get any playing time except for pinch hitting duties.

I'll be pissed even more if we sign Thome for around 5 million.

There's no way they sign Thome for anything over $2M if even that much.

Thome @ 2M used as a platoon LH DH batting around 5th or lower in the order is a great fit for the Sox. Paying him more than that or trying to use him as a centerpiece of the offense would be a big mistake.

Personally, I'd rather see the Sox acquire someone better than Thome for that last roster spot (someone like a Luke Scott would be a nice fit) but I'd much rather see the Sox sign Thome for cheap and platoon him at DH with Nix than go into the season with a Jones/Kotsay/Vizquel rotating DH.

You might still be right, but the Trib article said the interest in Johnson was "mutual", FWIW.

I could not agree more, this is all part of his plan.

Safe to say we tried to get Jenks on the ultra cheap for the next few years? Based on his declining performance I can't think we were trying to do anything but that..

Based on what Soriano and Valverde got, "ultra cheap" may have been actually fair market value, if not slightly above that. Whatever the Sox offer was, you have to wonder if Bobby is regretting passing on it right now. My main guess would be the Sox made a multi-year offer just to get around the 2011 arbitration situation where we may be forced to non-tender him.

Chad Tracy -- the same guy the Sox apparently could not afford -- signed a minor league deal with the Cubs, he'll make $900K if he makes the team there's another ~$500K in incentives if he reaches 450K. Yes, an MLC/$900K, frightening.

Smoke Screen. Nick Johnson was real, Chad Tracy was not.

Do you think there is any chance we could ever get Johnny Damon on a one year deal, notwithstanding his agent? That would be awesome, I realize it's a pipe dream so criticize me accordingly.

I think it could happen, but I think one of the biggest problems is the Sox signed Andruw Jones, also a Boras guy and Damon would take ABs away from him, but if the Sox money is right, and from what I'm reading Mark Teahan 2010 money is either the top bid or very close, I think Damon would sign with the Sox. I do know KW inquired earlier in the offseason when his price tag was much higher. I don't know if the Sox have any interest. After all, you wouldn't want Johnny Damon taking ABs away from Jones, Kotsay or Vizquel.
