Springfield Soxfan
This is just crazy. I try and get to Spring Training every year and there is no way I should have to pay to keep the Cubs in Mesa. That is just crazy, look at all the teams in Mesa right now and the Cubs think that they run the Cactus League. Hang tough JR!! http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseb...0,3569767.story
southsider2k5
Wow. That is gutsy. Burn your bridges with everyone.
BigEdWalsh
Pffft. This is so Cub-like. "The Cubs believe the surcharge is fair because of all the business they bring to the Cactus League." Some things never change.
nitetrain8601
Darn right. Jerry as far as I know, paid for his own stadium. Me thinks Ricketts should not have bought the team. He's trying to get everyone else to pay for them and will be cutting payroll two years in a row. They won't fire Hendry, even though he doesn't fit in with that philosophy because it would cost more money to do so and replace him. Guess what, you ARE the Cubs, you havent won s***, nobody outside of your crappy uninformed fanbase gives a s*** about watching you in Spring Training. Enjoy another terrible season. I was a little young when it went down, but I'm pretty sure the White Sox got the state to pay for most of the stadium then got an awesome lease agreement with them. scenario
Hmmm.... If the Cubs move to Naples... I wonder what team all those Chicago-area transplants and snowbirds in the Phoenix area will go watch during spring training.

Didn't the Sox just get a new place with the Dodgers? How did that work financially? (I really have no idea how it worked, didn't pay that much attention). Nyx81
QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Feb 6, 2010 -> 11:54 AM) Didn't the Sox just get a new place with the Dodgers? How did that work financially? (I really have no idea how it worked, didn't pay that much attention). I was wondering this as well. The Cubs threatened to leave the area if a new facility wasn't provided to them but I thought that they just signed a contract to stay in Az. for 25 years? Was this part of the agreement? Maybe they should partner up and share a nice new facility with another team and work something else out.
chw42
They're basically trying to hold the other teams hostage. Best thing to do here is to not give in. You don't need the Cubs in Arizona. Edited February 6, 2010 by chw42
Quin
Isn't there already a thread in the Diamond Club about this? Regardless, gotta hate the Cubs.

Jerksticks
It's not live or die for the other Arizona teams. Spring training dollars are not the meat of any team's revenues; at least I hope not. Anybody that lives outside of Arizona probably doesn't go to spring training, nor will they ever. It's just the facts. I wish I could do more to make Ricketts uncomfortable. Some sort of grass-roots campaign needs to take hold here. If all the residents of Arizona knew that these ticket and rental-car taxes could go to fund better education state-wide, the cubs would look like the bad guys. It's possible to ruin this for the cubs if enough of us campaign, and the right steps are taken. Anybody good at web design? I'll pay for the website; we need to get the people of arizona against the cubs. I would love nothing more.
Quin
QUOTE (knightd1 @ Feb 6, 2010 -> 12:17 PM) Maybe they should partner up and share a nice new facility with another team and work something else out. That would be blasphemy. The Cubs are a unique club with a long time honored tradition and shouldnt be forced to share a stadium with anyone. But seriously, there's being a crappy team, and then there's being just down right slime. Forcing other teams to pay for you is the later. Edit: It's amazing listening to Cubs fans defend this drek. Seriously, this is just such a crappy thing to do. Edited February 6, 2010 by Quinarvy
Chisoxfn
This really is ridiculous. However, I understand the thought process but everyone else has new stadiums so it really makes zero sense. If all the teams or a good chunk of the teams were in need of a new stadium I could see them thinking this could worse and they could use these funds over the years to bank and ensure that the cactus league sticks around. But in its current state it is absolutely freaking ridiculous. Plus, didn't the Sox have to actually spend money to get out of there lease? lostfan
I saw some Cubs fans complaining about how New Comiskey was financed with public money and how Jerry is being a hypocrite, honestly I fail to see how that's the same thing. Yeah, it pissed a lot of people off at the time, but that investment's probably paid for itself a couple of times over by now, and plus it's an ACTUAL stadium, not a spring training facility. They're just b****ing for the sake of finding fault.
