Balta1701
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 30, 2010 -> 08:43 AM) I've gotten this impression too - the baserunning has looked quite good, other than Pierre, strangely. Last night he was thrown out in the first inning trying to steal by nearly half a Podsednik.
Balta1701
Different subject. Paul Konerko right now probably wishes the season started a week ago. He's swinging the bat as well as I've seen him swing it since the first half of 2006. Every ball is hit hard. He's driving things every direction, he's got that hard fly ball to RF working just fine, he's hitting balls hard up the middle, down the LF line, everywhere. Here's hoping PK14 realizes he's playing for what could be his last contract.

I will say if he carries this approach north, he should be fine. He is thinking up the middle first, and turning on pitches when he gets a count. ScottyDo
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 30, 2010 -> 08:39 AM) Baserunning...there's been some nice stuff going on, except Juan Pierre looks awfully slow to me. Alexei, Rios, Becksy have been moving well. Ozzie has also pulled off some sweet hit and run/double steal plays in the spring, and I think almost everyone on this board would agree that the hit and run is the one pressure/speed play that Ozzie has underused the past few years, so hopefully he likes those. Defensively...well, we've improved the OF. The IF...hasn't looked good to me yet. Beckham's still obviously settling in at 2b, Alexei seems right where we left him last year. The IF looks fine to me, with the exception of 3b. Sometimes that's Teahen, mostly it's Nix that looks god awful out there. I don't actually believe that Nix is a bad defender out there, though, he just doesn't seem relaxed. Inexperience, I guess, but you'd hope he would work most of that out before the games started counting if we're actually planning on throwing him out there occasionally. I'm thinking that when we use Nix as a sub for Teahen, we should plug him in at 2b and move Bacon over to 3b.

I disagree with the bolded. 3B was a new position for Beckham last year too, and Beckham is our rising star. You don't mess with him. He plays 2nd unless there's some emergency. Nix is a bench guy and utility guy; if he wants to play more often, he needs to learn how to play 3B.

Well, I shouldn't say they look fine. They look like it's spring training. I'm not worried about Alexei or Beckham or Paulie when the season starts is what I really mean to say. I really hope Alexei takes a step forward mentally in the field, though. If he does that, he could be a seriously plus defender at the most important defensive position on the field. Indications are that he's the same Alexei from last year, though.
G&T
Ok so what's the deal with Flowers? I've read recently a blurb that the Sox will likely sign AJ because Flowers appears to be lost. Cowley was just on the Score and said the same thing. So what's really going on? Boers is actually talking about it right now. flavum
I think the issue with Flowers is that he hasn't advanced far enough to hand him the keys next year with basically the same starting staff. His defense is a work in progress, and his hitting has regressed. I guess just see what happens this season and go from there. If AJ has a good season, I hope they give him a 2 year deal, and trade Flowers. Maybe Josh Phegley will go up the organizational ladder without Flowers there. His defense has drastically improved since he was drafted, in fact, he was named the southern league defensive catcher of the year. No he will never be an elite defender, but he worked really hard on his defensive game and is very, very underrated as a pitch caller. If Flowers rakes this season, then see ya A.J. I love Flowers potential especially for a guy who will have a massive OBP/OPS. Give him some time.

Chisoxfn
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 30, 2010 -> 02:40 PM) It sure sounds like they're talking about some sort of newly negative statements about him coming from somewhere within the org. They have made adjustments to shorten his swing. Basically put, he's spending the year in the minors working on a decent overhaul to his swing so that he'll be able to succeed at the major league level (if he can make the adjustments). We shall see.

Pants Rowland
Anyone hear Rongey's interview of Matt Thornton this evening? Thornton is a really good interview and the Ranger did a great job covering some interesting topics. Then at the end, they are talking about how this is his 7th season. Thornton mentions it is his 5th with the White Sox and what a great experience it has been. He then says something like, "I hope I can stay with the Sox for another 5 years and finish my career here, but if not...whatever." It was such a hilarious nonchalant end to a really positive initial thought. Really funny stuff to me. Between that and the weather, I was wishing I could drive straight to the cell and catch 9 innings. Just 6 more days...

Springfield Soxfan
I just got back from a four day visit to Camelback Ranch to watch the Sox, it is a great experience!! With that, I know that this might be hard to believe, but from my perspective, Viciedo looked in GREAT shape, he is a husky guy, but we watched him him in the minor league fields each day and he belted a 420 foot homer yesterday. There were only five of us there each morning, one of the pitchers that had the coaches buzzing was Axelrod. He has never seemed to be on anyone's prospect list. It was mostly parents of the players and the four people in my group. It was cool!!!
