Alright, I'm incredibly late to the game, but I finally have my very own iPod (used to share one with the Mrs). I was wondering if any of you Soxtalkers out there can recommend some good ones... I'd enjoy comedy, fantasy sports, political... anything. Give me some recommendations, suckers.

Bill Burr's Monday Morning Podcast

I Love Movies with Doug Benson

Red Bar Radio - filthy comedians from Chicago

The Blue Line Hockey Podcast - the guy's kind of a nerd, but it's an entertaining show

The Rock and Roll Geek Show

Too bad you missed the spectacular podcast I used to do, it was legendary!

Harry Shearer's weekly radio show, posted usually early afternoon on Mondays at harryshearer.com.

Really? Le Show is almost unlistenable to me. It just sounds like a 60 year old reading wire copy bitterly for an hour. And that isn't nearly as funny as you'd think.

My usuals:

SModcast - Kevin Smith and His Producer/Friend Scott Mosier, just BS'ing about anything. Probably would only recommend if you're a KS fan

Adam Carolla Podcast - Though recently he hasn't had anyone interesting as a guest, and has done WAAAAAY too many "live" 'casts for my liking

I Love Movies - This is always live (I've actually been to a few of them) It's stand-up Doug Benson talking about recent movies with guests, most of them stand-ups as well.

I love the Adam Carolla podcast. I know there have been too many live ones, but reading between the lines it seems they kind of need to do those to keep it up and running since Donnie and Sandy didn't have a warchest like Adam did and that thing needs to start making some money. The live ones can be good, it's just hit or miss with the guests. When he had Chris Hardwick on a week or two ago it was one of the funniest 10-15 minutes he's done in awhile.

I personally think they try to incorporate Teresa and Bald Bryan too much, they seemingly had better chemistry together when I would stream his LA show, this seems forced, especially if they have a guest in.

The Greg Fitzsimmons podcast is good as well.

  • 3 months later...

I found and am bumping this thread cause I am really not a fan of how Adam Carolla's doing his podcast now...

It's basically him doing his morning show with all the lame little drops and all. It was 10x better when it was just him and a guest riffing on s***. I love Adam and have since the early 90's, but I can only take so much of his solo rants. It's better with more interesting guests for a hour plus together ranting. It was so refreshing and original now it's same old same old....he did the morning show format already...time to move on.

Also I find Teresa extremely annoying, so that doesn't help...

I am with you on all your points. I can not stand Teresa's voice. I only listen to his Podcast when they have a guest that I know.

Isn't he doing a whole network of podcasts now?

She just doesn't have the comedic chops to keep up with Adam.... She attempts soooo hard to be funny, but just fails...

Much to my own surprise, I disagree about the new/old ACS.

The thing I like is that they're doing the news again, which gives Adam a new well of topics to rant from.

The interview show was losing steam FAST. Adam was recycling stories all the time, and made each interview much more about him than about his guests. To be fair to Adam, though, 75% or more of his guests lately were nothing worth listening to anyway, so I'm sure he felt he needed to jump in to keep listeners awake.

I'm glad the old show format is back, with a truncated interview tacked on at the end.

The Ricky Gervais podcast was the best of all times

Totally agree. I hope they make some new ones. They have me crying most of the time.

Stuff You Should Know is great for car rides/commutes. Two guys pick some random topic (history, science, philosophy....pretty much anything) that's interesting and then give a 30-40 minute summary/history/discussion. Sometimes it leads to further reading which is good.

Bill Simmons (the sports guy) occasionally has good ones. But stay away from his small group of friends since they either talk about crap reality show and the yanks/sox. But when he has actual sports people it's good, or when he talks to guys like Alan Sepinwall or Chuck Klosterman it's pretty good.

I am a bit picky about Podcast presentation quality, so here is a list that have made my cut and that I listen to. You can decide if any of these apply to you:

Technology:

GDGT Weekly

HDTV and Home Theater Podcast

The Mac Observer's Mac Geek Gab

This Week In Tech

MacBreak Weekly

This Week in Google

Entertainment:

The Jay and Jack Show (founders of the LOST Podcast with Jay and Jack)

Pottercast (the production quality is pretty bad, but I listen to it because my wife loves it)

Inside The Magic (Disney news and reviews)

I am a huge Adam Carolla fan, have been for years, and I think they'll keep tinkering with it as they go along... I think the solo guest was getting old to a point because they put one out every day and really didn't have a guest of that quality for everyday.

As far as it goes now, I like that they added the news and some of the little games they play, but what they really need to do is when the guest comes in have Teressa leave or shut her mic off. When the guest comes in she cuts Adam off, brings up things that have already been discussed, etc... the best example I can think of was when Bobby Lee the comedian was on about 2-3 weeks ago... the first 10 minutes of that interview is a complete cluster F because of Teressa, she tries to act like a co-host too much instead of sidekick.

Also, I went to Adam's live podcast from the Park West last Thursday, it was a lot of fun. he did about an hour and a half with maybe about 10 minutes of pre-recorded videos from things like Crank Yankers and the Man Show. He had a good turnout, it was a real good time. Also met Donnie and Adam, talked to Donnie for awhile, very nice and appreciative of all the support, Adam was quick after the show, got a pic with him, again, very nice and appreciative.

Since I can't ever catch them when they air:

This American LIfe

Wait Wait Don't Tell me

All songs considered

Prairie home companion

are my things.

I'm not that into Podcasts, but my dad linked me to their discussion for the best opening tracks ever, and I really enjoyed it. I might start listening to it on a regular basis.. seems really quality.
