southsider2k5
QUOTE (sircaffey @ Mar 12, 2010 -> 03:30 PM) I think Putz is by far the biggest question mark in the pen. If he's pitching well enough to take over for Bobby, I think we're in good shape. If Putz arm is healthy, he is not a question mark.
SoxAce
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 12, 2010 -> 04:42 PM) If Putz arm is healthy, he is not a question mark. Not to mention so far.. it seems he got his velocity back and has looked really, really sharp in these games. If this continues, he'll probably be as comfortable for fans to see get outs as Thornton is.
Dick Allen
As bad as Linebrink supposedly has been, his ERA was lower each of the past 2 seasons than Putz. The confidence in Putz around here is amazing. If he gets back to where he was 3 seasons ago, its warranted, but let's be real. One guy needs to be bought out, and one guy is the savior? Look at the numbers. Edited March 12, 2010 by Dick Allen

soxrwhite
Bullpens are always worrisome. Dotel and Linebrink last year? Stomach ulcer time. Jenks hasn't been the same for about a year and a half now. He has been awful so far this spring. Putz is coming off injury any hard thrower coming off injury is to be questioned until he proves he can do it again. All teams have question marks in the pen. It is the nature of it. Most of those guys were not good enough to make it as starters so they are second tier pitchers or reclamation projects or no control hard throwers. Our pen could go either way and most guys will have good and bad outings. Ozzie and Cooper will have to place the right guy in the right spot at the right time for success. .........Except Linebrink he's done. DBAHO
You hang onto him, hope he can become a reliever who can give you an ERA under 4 for the 1st half of 2010, and then move him at the deadline for a prospect. But there's no way the Sox eat his contract. Some may call it stubborn, but KW, Ozzie and Coop probably think that Linebrink can rebound, and be the pitcher he was in the 1st half of 2009. The reason that OUR bullpen is even more worrisome is that our crappy farm system precludes us from having any viable reaplacement options in the minors. If you loook around baseball, even the big market teams are stocking thier pens with younger, cheaper arms....not $5 million cast offs like Scott Linebrink, Dotel Putz etc. This is why I hope that the Sox keep Hudson...I see him as a viable pen replacement as the season progresses. I hope I am wrong but my biggest fear is the bullpen on this team.
jenksycat
One of the nice things about having a stud starting rotation is needing a slightly less lights out bullpen. If Putz and Jenks are healthy, I'm not worried about the pen at all with Thorton-Putz-Jenks to close out games Edited March 13, 2010 by Jenksy Cat
kitekrazy
QUOTE (greg775 @ Mar 12, 2010 -> 01:37 AM) How's he looking this spring? The money thing always amazes me in baseball. Teams play guys and keep guys cause they make a lot of money. And the LOSE GAMES because of this and ultimately lose money. If a guy sucks put him in the Carrasco role of last year. Long long relief or send him down. That's what they do in the NFL. They cut your ass. Player keeps the bonus money but not the yearly contract money. That's because the NFL always had better commissioners and not so stupid owners. But football is a sport that also relies more on team performance. If the NFL becomes anything like MLB, I'll find something else to do on Sundays. The most recent and most viewed Super Bowl featured two of the smallest markets in the NFL. Players do have to earn their check in the NFL especially when they get older. NFL teams get stuck with players too. Look at Tommie Harris. He's like the Rios of the Bears.
