ThunderBolt
QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Mar 30, 2010 -> 06:31 PM) Honestly, only mistake they made was keeping Nix. He's not defensive specialist. He's special defensively. What? How was it a mistake to keep a guy who can play 2b, 3b, SS, Lf and is hitting .341 this spring with an .OPB of .386 and an OPS of .850? Those aren’t even close to being poor numbers. What’s up with this recent surge in hatred for Jayson Nix? He was a rookie last year, and made rookie mistakes. He’s going to have an adjustment period just like everyone else.

I'm totally in favor of Nix making the team. I think he's a great option for what we need. People are just displeased with his poor 3b defense this spring, I think. I'm one of them. He sure looks bad over there.

What’s up with this recent surge in hatred for Jayson Nix? He was a rookie last year, and made rookie mistakes. He’s going to have an adjustment period just like everyone else. He's had a fair amount of service time already and is nothing too spectacular overall. If I recall correctly, he also had a really nice spring last year and the 2009 results weren't great. I understand why he is on the roster, but I am not sure he is going to add much value over 162 games.

This is a guy whose spend his entire career at 2b, and it shows. He was a disaster at SS, and clearly a project at 3b, but we're a team that's gambling on nearly every position on the team. We can afford to gamble on the 25th man.

ThunderBolt
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Mar 30, 2010 -> 09:18 PM) he can only play one of those positions adequately. And he's not starting at any of them, so what's the issue? He's the last man off the bench, he hits the crap out of LHP's, and he's really the only source of power we have going for us back there. He's not going to cost us anything as a staple for the sunday lineup, i'd argue he might even win us a few games too.
witesoxfan
.716 OPS, as well as a .822 OPS against lefties, is really not that bad for a bench player. If he were better than that, he'd be starting. And maybe after a year of experience, be it playing or just sitting on the bench, he'll be better this year. That really wouldn't surprise me a hell of a lot. Nix is like the 25th man, and he's got some things going for him. His presence on the roster will not make or break the Sox chances this season. Quin
Nix is fine, the only reason I didn't want him to make it was because I really wanted to see CJ.
Voros
QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Mar 30, 2010 -> 12:20 PM) I can't wait to see Anti-Ankiel in person. He is one of my most anticipated players to watch. He throws very hard (obviously). So far from seeing him live (I live in AZ) and on TV he has a tendency to fall behind and then they sit on his fastball. And he don't throw _that_ hard to get by doing that. His off-speed stuff isn't awful, but I don't see him throwing them for strikes in the Majors right now. I think he's mopup duty and I also think if he winds up with any sort of knock, they'll DL him with as lengthy a rehab stint as they can get away with. I don't think the White Sox believe he's a more effective pitcher than Hudson or Torres right now, but Hudson needs to get his starts and both he and Torres have options left. But the Sox need to commit to this move. There's no point in going ballistic on him when the inevitable train-wreck outing pops up for him. It's going to happen, so folks need to understand what's going on and be a little more patient with him than others.
chw42
You'd think people would like Nix for his awesome range and his flashy plays, but nooo.... I remember that people loved Alexei at second and he made boneheaded plays there too.
DBAHO
You look at Nix's numbers from last season as well, .608 OPS at home (with a .175 AVG) and a .812 OPS in away games. So if you're going to use him, against lefties on the road is going to be the ideal opportunity it seems.
Quin
QUOTE (chw42 @ Mar 30, 2010 -> 09:46 PM) You'd think people would like Nix for his awesome range and his flashy plays, but nooo.... I remember that people loved Alexei at second and he made boneheaded plays there too. It was the .224 batting average that got me. Plus, Alexei's glove flip to Paulie easily tops anything Nix has done.

Don't forget about that hit he saved Colon against the Angels where he ranged about half the infield to get a screaming liner off of Rivera's bat. What angers me at times is people complaining about some error that Nix made. Truth be told, the majority of the time, your usual second baseman doesn't get to the ball Nix gets to. They just like them more for it and if you can play defense, then that's just an add-on.

That's a nice non sequitor, but I haven't seen anyone complain about his play at 2B. The problem is that the guy is a back up utility IF, and he only plays defense at one position well. It knocks your value down a lot when you aren't very good at the different parts of your job.
elrockinMT
It's great to know we have major league talent at Charlotte and Birmingham ready to step in if needed. My guess is we will have an opening or three in 2011 to fill with youth. Maybe santos becomes a rookie of the year candidate in 2010?
