(SN Report #587) - In a move to bolster their pitching staff, the White Sox traded for Angels lefty reliever Scott Schoeneweis and minor league pitcher Doug Nickle today. In return, the White Sox sent reliever Gary Glover and two minor leaguers.

It is being reported that the two minor leaguers the White Sox gave up are pitchers Scott Dunn and Tim Bittner.

The 29-year-old Schoeneweis, a starter coming into this season, has pitched in 39 games out of the bullpen this season with the Angels. In 38 2/3 innings, Schoeneweis has a 3.96 ERA and 1-1 record. Opponenets are batting .250 off him.

For the triple-A Salt Lake City Stingers, Nickle, 28, was 2-1 with 1.48 ERA in 34 games and 48 2/3 innings. Nickle has given up 40 hits and has struck out 23.

In 24 relief appearances, Glover, 26, posted a 4.54 ERA in 35 2/3 innings. In three season's with the Sox, Glover is 13-13 with a 5.02 ERA in 111 games (33 starts).

Bittner, a 23-year-old lefty, went 4-4 with a 3.40 ERA in 50 1/3 (10 starts) with low-A Kannapolis, and 3-3 with a 3.60 ERA in 30 innings (17 starts) with high-A Winston Salem.

Dunn, 25, is a right-hander who was acquired from the Reds in the D'Angelo Jimenez trade. In 10 2/3 innings with the double-A Birmingham Barons, Dunn was 3-1 with a 1.69 ERA. He is 6-3 overall this season with a 3.35 ERA in 39 games and 51 innings.

The White Sox have yet to decide what Schoeneweis' role will be, but as of now he will be used as a reliever.

Schoeneweis started 15 games for the Angels in 2002 and went 6-6 with a 5.38 ERA. He averaged slighly over six innings per start. Out of the bullpen, he had a 3.25 ERA in 27 2/3 innings. In the post-season, he allowed one run in three innings.

Dunn had pretty good numbers, but I think he was 26, and still in AA...hasn't been with us too long.

Ya...we gave up one older prospect for one thats a bit older but with better numbers. Not quite as good of an arm, but I've heard Nickle can hit 94 (Saw him pitch but didn't pay close enough attention to hte point I can't remember him much). I know he looked solid.

Bittner is just a scrub in my book.

So Now we gotta see where Scho goes, Bullpen of 5th starter. I hope he stays put in the bullpen, because than they have Scho in middle relief from the left side, and Ginter from the right.

Ginter is gonna replace glover, imo.  I still see one more trade being made.

Good point Jas, we have Ginter to do what Glover has already been doing and I believe Ginter can do a better job of it. If I'm not mistaken Ginter was either a 1st round pick or close to it.

I like this trade. Schoeneweis can be used in the pen (and hes done ok there) and if hes the fifth starter hes better than Porzio or White. And we didnt lose anything either. Glovers nothing really and neither are the two prospects.

I also have faith that a deal with Cincinnati is going down. Thats teams already started its housecleaning and I think were gonna get some of the benefits...

From CBSsportsline.com

"Right now, our primary need for him is in the bullpen," White Sox general manager Ken Williams said. "He's not stretched out enough to go into the rotation."

Good.

In fact, I like that more. He never was a great starter but hes been OK outta the pen. He can replace White in long relief...

Someone brought up a couple weeks ago when the Sox got Alomar that one of the reasons may have been that he has a ring already. Schoenweiss has one too.

Also his July ERA of 1.59 may have had something to do with it.

I think everyone here will like Scho. If he is happy with staying in the pen I think he could turn into a stud reliever for the Sox for a while.

Scott was a pretty good starter in 2001, and he has complained about not given the chance to start this year, especially since the majority of their starters have struggled.

This might just be a "just in case" trade if we don't trade for another starter. Otherwise, he is great long relief.

I like it...This guy put has put up some pretty solid numbers this year. I think they said he' sportin a 2.67 era in his last 30 outings. And he pitched well for the Angels last year in his last 30 outings or so. So now we gotta a guy that can hold the forte down in the 6th and 7th to set it up for Gordon and Marte. As far as what we gave up...Who gives a f***. We're goin for it all this year. It's all about makin it to the playoffs. After that everything is fair game. I'd like to see 1 more deal done before the deadline. A 5th starter would complete this team....
