I like it...This guy put has put up some pretty solid numbers this year.  I think they said he' sportin a 2.67 era in his last 30 outings.  And he pitched well for the Angels last year in his last 30 outings or so.  So now we gotta a guy that can hold the forte down in the 6th and 7th to set it up for Gordon and Marte.  As far as what we gave up...Who gives a f***.  We're goin for it all this year.  It's all about makin it to the playoffs.  After that everything is fair game.  I'd like to see 1 more deal done before the deadline.  A 5th starter would complete this team....

Great analysis. Agree 100%. :headbang

SCHOW is just a LH specialist. 647 OPS vs. 487 OPS vs LH, 817 OPS vs RH

But there is promise for 2004 for him to be a 5th starter:

2000 SCHOW lev A 3.87 NPERA, rank 27, 170 ip, 7 W

2001 SCHOW lev A 4.19 NPERA, rank 29, 205 ip, 10W

2002 SCHOW lev B 4.08 NPERA, rank 55, 118 ip, 9W

2003 SCHOW lev B 2.65 NPERA, rank 15, 38.2 ip, 1W

SCHOW has lowered his ERA every yr in the last 4. He's also improved against RH from 933 OPS vs to 817 OPS vs.

I would fathom to say that right now he's better than any other pitcher we have ML or ml for 5th starter. He still has another yr of arbitration left, so it's possible we now have a solid 5th starter for next yr for about 2MIL. Tha't s not too shabby of a trade.

Assuming we can keep Colon, a rotation of :

Colon, Buehrle, E-LO, Garland, & Schow looks pretty good!

Schow will definitely benefit from being spaced betw Garland & Colon.

The more I read, the more I like:

"Right now, our primary need for him is in the bullpen,'' White Sox general manager Ken Williams said. "He's not stretched out enough to go into the rotation.''

Schoeneweis, 29, is 1-1 with a 3.96 ERA in 39 relief appearances this season. He has a 28-31 career record with a 5.10 ERA in 183 games, including 74 starts.

Williams said Schoeneweis will be given a chance in spring training to win a spot in the starting rotation.

"He has three quality pitches," Williams said. "We can visualize him in our rotation next year.''

Here's what I'm thinking:

They'll either sign Mark to a contract paying less than the original offer, or they will do another 1 yr. That free's up $ for Colon.

A rotation of E-LO, Mark, Colon, Garland, & Schow would be as good as any other in the AL & certainly good enough to repeat as ALC champs.

I think they have an option on Gordon so they'll still have the anchor of Gordon & Marte for setup & closer. I imagine Wunsch will be back as well.

Leaving just 3 more spots to fill in the BP. Ginter could make it with a strong 2nd 1/2, & Porzio will certainly get another shot. Leaving what spot for a ml call up. That looks like a pretty strong BP as well.

I would imagine the SOX will try to cut the $$$'s by dealing Koney & Kroch in the off-season. Of course that's only possible if both put up decent #'s in the last 2 months. Kroch is a luxury with Marte on the team.

Right now the trade looks pretty dumb. The SOX would probably be leading the division With set roles in BP:

Marte & Gordon : setup & closer

Foulke: Long Relief

Wunsch/Porzio : LH specialist

Glover/Ginter: mid RH

Sanders/White: mid RH

Everyone thought we were trading for a 99 MPH heater when we dealt Foulke. That heater hasn't made it past 94 yet. Meanwhile Gordon & Marte throw 96-97 almost effortlessly. I think it's a given now that Beane knows he over-used Kroch last yr, & his velocity dropped off considerably.

BBTN said that KW was disappointed we didn't get Scott Williamson today also. Man even with all the criticism from some of his past moves, this GM is not gun-shy and I have to say I like alot of the moves we are making during these past couple weeks. Schoeneweis has good stuff but for some reason has had trouble staying in a rotation. We'll see if we can't get him right for a starting role by next season. This could make Danny Wrong expendable or we could move him to the bullpen like alot of us want. I like the move so far.

Whoever said Doug Nickle can touch 94, bulls***. Look at his K totals in minors, no way he throws that hard. He is an effective reliever tho. Decent trade, tho I liked Dunn, now he throws harder than either guy we got, but I still like it.

Yep, sounds like we were gonna get him but the Reds liked who they got from the REd Sox as they saw him throw a no hitter when they were scouting him.

KW is a good GM...I think in a while he'll be considered a great GM.

Solid move by Kenny, we practically gave up nothing. And like Juggernaut said, I think Scho will just be a lefty specialist in the bullpen (that was his primary job w/ the Angels). He might go into spring training next year bidding for the starter job.

Someone brought up a couple weeks ago when the Sox got Alomar that one of the reasons may have been that he has a ring already. Schoenweiss has one too.

Also his July ERA of 1.59 may have had something to do with it.

My God they are thinking post season experience!? Cool.

I like this trade. Schoeneweis can be used in the pen (and hes done ok there) and if hes the fifth starter hes better than Porzio or White.

With Williams comments about Schoney getting a chance to be a starter NEXT spring training and that we need him in the pen now, I think KW is still in the market for a 5th starter.

Dumatrait was number one draft pick for Boston in 2000 I think. Wonder is Sanchez may be PTBNL, Williamson could not have been cheap, Cincy needs Larkin replacement, nah, I doubt they got Sanchez, but ya never know.

Actually, Williamson was probably very cheap--The REds were simply looking to take salaries off their books. They weren't necessarily looking to get anything substantial in return. If Boston gives up Sanchez, they overpaid.
