Brillance of Buerhle

How would a person explain a pitcher who averages 9 hits per 9 innings pitching a no hitter, a perfect game and a 1 hitter? Once is considered luck twice can be considered a fluke but three times is a trend. Buerhle is what most scouts consider hittable because he is always around the plate. His no hitter came against the always offensively productive Texas Rangers and his perfect game came against the dangerous line up of the Tampa Bay Rays. To further paint the picture Buehrle has pitched two 2 hit games. He is bulldog on the mound that battles every hitter. Mark is always around the plate with his pitches. He only averages 2 walks per 9 innings. With his pinpoint control, Buerhle allows hitters to get themselves out. Unlike most pitchers, he does not fear contact.

By the the time he retires, he will be my favorite Sox player. Statisticians will try to find the magic stat that will answer your question, but it is elusive. The best way to describe it is "it", as in he has "it". I would also say confidence and a positive outlook.

Seriously. How many other pitchers will willingly go up to their catcher and other teammates while on the bench in the 6th or after during a no hitter or perfecto, and just shoot the s*** like nothing is happening? Everyone else in that position is all uptight, and the team reacts as well. The tv shots of Buerhle joking with AJ after the 7th just show how relaxed and confident he is with what he is doing. Always calm and collected, he doesn't need the outward fire and flare that other pitchers have because he's confident in what he can do.

to be quite honest, i'm a bit surprised he's had just 1 one hitter and 2 two hitters. It doesn't seem like those have been rare.

Well, that's 2 hits over 9 innings of work, that's rather rare and hard to do. He has 12 starts of 7+ innings and 2 or fewer hits over his career. 10 of 8+ innings.

A Hall of Fame pick off move as well as great defense help his case. If runners were able to steal off of him effectively, his career numbers would not look nearly as good, but because it almost always (like 99% of the time) takes 2 singles to score a runner from first against him, he cuts down on runs.

38 times second base has been stolen against him and 52 times runners have been thrown out at second. Only three attempts against him to steal third and two were successful. He has also had home stolen against him once. So in total he holds stolen bases to 42% and league average is right around 70%. That is remarkable. He has 70 pickoffs to go along with 37 pickoffs while caught stealing. Jose contreras has averaged 20.4 stolen bases against of second base in his career compared to buehrle's 3.8.

Buehrle is decent you could say.

:o Wow, 40 stolen bases against over a 10+ year career, and really, Olivo was the only above average catcher in terms of keeping running games in check. That's just astounding. This guy is so underappreciated.
