Texsox
http://www.cnn.com/2010/TECH/04/20/leaked....dex.html?hpt=T2 (CNN) -- Apple Inc. hasn't said how much future generations of the iPhone will cost, but an editor of a technology blog said his site shelled out $5,000 to get its hands on a possible prototype. Gizmodo Senior Editor Jesus Diaz said his blog paid "a source" $5,000 for the phone, which was shown in a video on the blog Monday. "Paying for an exclusive has always been done in the journalism world. There are people who admit they do it and people who do not. We have done it," Diaz told CNN's Gabriela Frias in an interview on CNN en Español's "En Efectivo." Diaz said the blog's source obtained the phone after it was left in a bar. "An engineer was in a bar, celebrating his birthday. He drank two drinks too many and forgot the phone," Diaz said. He said Gizmodo returned the phone to Apple after receiving a letter asking for it. Seems like a fake deal that the gullible and Apple fans will grab onto.
HuskyCaucasian
I disagree. This is VERY unApple. They are message control freaks. They like to keep it close to the vest until they get on stage at a press event. If they want to build interest, they have very controlled information leaks through select outlets. But to have a prototype "accidentally" left at a barm then be bought by a blog is not very wise on their part.
MEANS
yeah at first this seemed fishy but after following this a bit it looks like the real deal.

The dont leave hardware just laying around. that's my point. Yes, they leak details to "friendly" journalists. But they never outright leave hardware int he open. Texsox
They remotely deactivated key features, which means they could have tracked it and recovered it much quicker. Why would they even allow it out of the lab? As secret as they are, this time they allowed someone to walk around in public with a new version of the iPhone? Sorry, this smells of a marketing ploy. And kudos to them for it. It is unlike them to do it, which is necessary for the ploy to work. Brilliant

If they wanted attention to the product all they would have to do is announce the thing and there would be an absolute whirlwind of attention for it. What does this accomplish? They already know what people want it to do...if there is one thing about Apple products is they get massive press coverage and massive reviews... I mean don't get me wrong, I'm not saying they didn't do this purposefully. Just that I don't understand it.
MEANS
and besides these items are worked on so far in advance so you know every jun-july for the past 3 yrs/ they release a new one so this years phone is pretty much done and ready to go, you have to test it out in the real world, so employees get almost finished models to test out. I mean don't get me wrong, I'm not saying they didn't do this purposefully. Just that I don't understand it. It doesnt appear to be purposeful considering the actions that were taken to get it back, to keep info from people and also the case to disguise it like an iphone 3g. I am getting my 3gs this week and hopefully will be rocking 4.0 OS in June. The new one they got ahold of though appears to have taken care of alot of people's gripes, especially the ichat issue. It looks like you will be able to ichat from your iphone, which is sick.
bmags
Yeah I don't know. Their marketing ploy was "hey go leave this on a bar stool after you've been drinking on your 27th birthday and have it be picked up a guy who conveniently knows a lot about techware enough to know it's not a regular iphone and have him sell it to gizmodo, the web zine that covered our outsourced apple company torturing an employee after he let go information instead of having a huge convention with a gazillion web sites live tweeting all day! Brilliant!"
