bschmaranz
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=5137456 Madness. Is this what Adrian Gonzalez could wind up getting? Fielder?

Balta1701
QUOTE (bschmaranz @ Apr 26, 2010 -> 02:46 PM) Madness. Is this what Adrian Gonzalez could wind up getting? Fielder? H. Christ that's a lot. And yes. Fielder/Gonzalez could easily demand that going rate over 8 years.
LittleHurt05
He's already 30 years old?? Paying him $25 mil when he's 34-36 is probably not gonna work out all that well.
Balta1701
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Apr 26, 2010 -> 02:59 PM) He's already 30 years old?? Paying him $25 mil when he's 34-36 is probably not gonna work out all that well. They can just trade him to the Yankees then.
Kalapse
And the precedent has been set. Fielder, Gonzalez and especially Pujols are all salivating right now, that's an ungodly amount of money. I don't even know how much Pujols is going to get at this point, the all time record will most definitely be threatened, though. 10 years, $275M would have to be the starting point. If he hits the 2011 market, who's to say they don't have to guarantee him 8-9 years to get him signed?

chw42
They're actually going to pay him until he's 37 or 38. What a stupid idea. He was already signed through 2011.
Milkman delivers
I never thought of Ryan Howard as being that great. When he first came around, there were a few, well, idiots who thought he'd surpass Pujols in homers. To them, he seemed like the next "young" monster who was on an even more ridiculous pace than Pujols. None of them seemed to realize he's actually older than Pujols. Leonard Zelig
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Apr 26, 2010 -> 04:36 PM) I never thought of Ryan Howard as being that great. He hit more HRs than Pujols in 3 consecutive years, last year Albert had 2 more.
nitetrain8601
You could make an argument that he has more power than Pujols. It wouldn't sound strange because there are several players who have more power than him. What you have to take into account is overall package. Howard isn't that great in terms of overall. He K's way too much for my liking. That alone would make me shave $25 million off his contract.

Compared to what Albert would get if he took a 5 year extension, this probably is shaving $25 million off of it.
MattZakrowski
Old player skills. That is all.
Jordan4life_2007
To be fair, Ryan has lost a good 25-30 pounds since 2008. His defense has improved. He's also running better. But yeah, the overall contract is ridiculous.
kjshoe04
Once he loses some of his bat speed in the next couple of years this is going to not look like a good move.
Kalapse
So since he was already signed to a 3 year, $54M deal add this new deal on top of it: 5 years, $125M and you get 8 years, $179M or $1M less than what Tex got last offseason (8 years, $180M). So in reality no precedent has been set, rather Teixeira's contract continues to be the new precedent for elite 1B.

I'm talking in regards to the pace for career homers. They're just about the same age, but Pujols was around earlier and is way ahead for career total. Jordan4life_2007
So why exactly did the Phillies not keep Lee? Certainly couldn't have been about money.
Balta1701
QUOTE (kjshoe04 @ Apr 26, 2010 -> 08:07 PM) Once he loses some of his bat speed in the next couple of years this is going to not look like a good move. One interesting thing worth noting is that Howard has actually seemingly worked on getting better in a number of aspects of his game. Did you know that Pujols and Howard have basically the exact same K/PA rate so far this season? And that the fielding bible is saying that Howard's D has improved enough that he's up with Pujols at the top of the NL on that side of the ball?
